Augmented reality, but make it Data Art

Behind every map at Litara, it’s just me and my code. Today I wanted to blend the physical world with the data I work with.

Standing in Nerja near Balcón de Europa and looking up at a sky built entirely from the typographic map of Andalusia. Every single word up there is geographically anchored to its real-world location.

To me it's about visualizing the footprint we leave on the places we call home.

From what coordinate are you viewing this today?

🔗 Clean, ultra-high-res typographic maps are available in the link in my bio.

71 000 Orte, jeder gleich hell. Welchen erkennst du? 👇

Reconoces tu calle? 👇

Nobody drew this coastline. It appears on its own - out of 7,645 town names, each one sitting on its exact coordinate. No borders, no outlines, no decoration.

Thousands more didn't make it. When two names collide, one gets dropped, so every town on here won its spot against its neighbours.

Zoom all the way in and you can read every single one.

Found yours? Tell me which 👇

I let every town keep its own language when I built this - German in Zürich's cantons, French out west, Italian in Ticino, Romansh in Graubünden's mountains. Switzerland doesn't pick one language for itself. And this map doesn't either.

Last slide is the German-speaking core - Zürich, Winterthur, over 800 towns, each locked to its exact coordinate. Nothing moved, nothing decorated.

Full listing: 4 maps in one (Uniform + Population font, Light + Noir) - perfect decoration of your wall. Want your own town to stand out ? I do custom versions too - both links in bio.

No lines. No borders. Every frame here is a real fragment of a map made entirely from town names - each one sitting on its exact coordinates.

Pause the moment you spot your own country.

Ready-to-print files for many countries are already in my shop, and I make custom versions for anywhere else - link in bio.

Every dot is one named place, sitting on its exact coordinate. No borders, no coastlines drawn - the shape is made only of where people settled.

Ireland burns brighter for a reason: 62,364 named places. Because Ireland named its land, not just its towns. Townlands - roughly one for every square mile, most of them Gaelic, most of them older than the Normans.

Britain named its towns. Ireland named everything. And your townland is certainly in there.
