I'm alive, I swear!

📖 In the Midnight Hour
✍️ @darcyburkeauthor

I LOVE a historical (and especially, Regency) fiction—even more when there are elements of mystery or romance 👀 luckily, my husband couldn't have brought me this book at a more perfect time as I'm more and more in need of a good distraction. The back and forth between Lord Northwood and Lady Cartwright is chef's kiss! 😘

What to Expect:
🔮Regency era
🔮Cozy mystery
🔮Amateur sleuths
🔮Reluctant allies
🔮A hint of romance
🔮Lovable feline sidekick

✨️ [quick ish? life update below] ✨️
I had to be induced due to preeclampsia with severe features (just like my first daughter), ended up having an emergency c-section, and my baby is now in the NICU. Thankfully, I could be wheeled to the NICU (I couldn't with my last daughter and it was torture 😢), but they don't allow children under 12 in (aka, her sister), so daddy and I are doing our best to take photos and videos for her and the fam, as well as making sure I'm recovering as much as I'm able (controlling my blood pressures, trying to break up several blood clots, antibiotics for the PICC line and uterine infections I've picked up, getting my edema down, etc.).

I can't do this again so this will be my last pregnancy. But if you all could see the two perfect little girls I've got... my family is complete 🩷

to my friends in this space—
thanks so much for sticking with me!

and to those authors (especially indie), publishers, PR companies, etc. that have done me the honor of sending me books, particularly while I've been in the hospital—
thank you so, so much for giving me something to look forward too! I promise, even if late, I'm doing my best to get to all of them 🫶

💛Historical Fantasy Friday💛

📖 Lady Tremaine
✍️ @hochhauser

My mind keeps drifting back to this book. It has been a little while since I read it, but it feels especially fitting to think about it right now as I sit in the hospital waiting to be induced due to preeclampsia with severe features.

What made Lady Tremaine stand out so much is how brilliantly the author flips a classic story completely on its head, giving Lady Tremaine real humanity and, above all, a fierce maternal heart. Sitting here on the edge of meeting my second baby under such stressful circumstances makes those themes of motherhood hit in a whole new way.

Q?: Have you ever read a retelling that completely shifted how you viewed a villain?

P.S. Also, wish me luck!! 🤞 Hopefully this time next week we'll have an early—but healthy—baby 🩷

Since I can't be with my own shelves at the moment, please enjoy this dose of #shelfiesunday beauty, courtesy of my amazing sister-in-law! ✨

No major updates from my end. 🥴 I'm still posted up in the hospital, missing my family something fierce, but my current mission is convincing my husband that a stack of books is an absolute medical necessity. A girl needs her comfort reads! 📚🤞

I'm slowly making my way through this, but I'm loving it so far! I think the idea of the Hollow is fantastic, and based on what others have said, I believe I'll like the romance as well 🥰

SYNOPSIS:
The gods forged a weapon to end their wars and chained it inside the soul of an unfortunate immortal king.

Elannah Veyne has spent her entire life ashamed, bullied into believing the shadows under her skin mark her as cursed. When the first chain breaks and the sky begins to crack, she is torn from the life she’s always dreamt of leaving behind.

Pulled into the immortal Court of Mournveil, she learns the power inside her is far more dangerous than she suspected. It marks her as the only one capable of commanding the divine chains that bind the Hollow.

She is bound to Evric, who has spent centuries containing the Hollow, a sentient, world-ending force that whispers sweet and cruel nothings alike at the edges of his mind, waiting for the day it can wear his body like a crown.

As rival Courts scheme, the Veil between realms thins, and the gods themselves move against them, Elannah and Evric are faced with an impossible choice: preserve the chains keeping the world intact, or defy the gods who forged this curse and break them to see what the worl by @literarialuminaria

📖 The Stargazer of Nantucket
✍️ @juliegerstenblatt

This is the story of a mother, a father, a daughter, and a ship. And how immersive it was! It truly felt like I was along for the journey as the characters sailed from one coast of the United States to the other, and then to China. If you're looking for a sea adventure set in 19th century, look no further. The pacing is fairly slow, though it picks up more than a bit toward the end and wraps up quite nicely.

📖 Divine Oaths
✍️ Elizabeth Agyemang

Hiiii! 👋 I meant to post this yesterday but I had a bit of a rough day at the hospital and it just didn't happen 🥴

ANYWAY, who is looking for a dark academia similar to Ninth House to kick off the -ber months?! The pacing is a bit on the slower side, and the characters are somewhat flat, but this one is a good story to slowly ease your way into the season, imo.

Thanks to @coloredpagesbt @thenovl @netgalley for the gifted copy.

#DivineOathsTour #coloredpagesbooktours #darkacademiareads #fallreads🍂 #gothicbook

Ninth House meets Legendborn in this thrilling dark academia debut following a new student fueled by questions about her prestigious university and the haunting answers she uncovers as her heart pulls her in two different, dangerous directions.

Westfield University was supposed to be Sianna Adu’s dream school. But just when she’s on the cusp of attending the elite academic institution hidden in Virginia’s swampland, an unexpected tragedy changes everything. In one day, Sianna loses her family and gains an extraordinary power—the ability to see lifelines and witness other people’s pasts and futures.

With all she’s lost, Sianna puts her college dreams on pause and spends her days navigating dead-end jobs and a not-so-secret crush on her coworker. But when Kasem Saint James, the undeniably handsome heir of Westfield, approaches her with a strange request, the future Sianna has long deferred becomes a dangerous new reality. Worried that her powers are now tied to Kasem, she has no choice. Fate has called her to Westfield.

At an academy where secret societies abound, connections are everything, and an ominous history—stretching back centuries—determines the future, Sianna and Kasem must piece together the past to undo a curse that binds them to each other.

With a swoony romance and jaw dropping twists, this layered dark academia novel introduces a university where nothing is quite as it seems. by @literarialuminaria
