My name is Birdie, or Bird. It’s nice to meet you!

A lot of you have known me as one thing and one thing only for a long time, and it’s time for something new—namely, a version of myself who is more comfortable in their skin and their personhood!

Change can be hard, so I understand mistakes, but I also deserve the respect of being addressed correctly, so I do expect people to undertake the work of doing it right.

Ten years.
Ten years ago I was scrawny and scared and sad.
And then there she was. Abandoned and starving and beaten; scrawny and scared and sad.
“If I adopted that dog,” I said, “I would name her Vex.”

So I did.
And here we are, ten years later to the day. There are no easy words to describe the road we’ve been down, but we’ve been together the whole way. We take care of each other. Sometimes it has felt like only us against the world, but always “us.”

She taught me how to love, how to live, how to get up every morning no matter how little I wanted to. She’s my best friend and my partner in crime and my soulmate.

I was obsessed with cats when I was a kid, but not allowed to have one. Later, I lived with them and fell so deeply in love that leaving them broke my heart. I moved out on my own and I bided my time and built a literal vision board and waited and waited and waited. And then in 2021, a friend nudged me in a particular direction: “If you do this,” she said, “you could finally get a cat.”

So five years and a good deal of madness later, I have my little troublemaker. Rosencrantz. Mr. Crantz. Horrible stinky goblin man. Baby boy. Little trash goblin boy. Sir, Please Stop Doing That. Sir, This Is A Wendy’s. Why Are You WET. And other such names.

We were made for each other. I’ll always be grateful for @annbipom for pushing me in the right direction and @onetailatatime for giving me the chance to give this little ball of chaos a good home. by @literaryvengeance
