Corvid Chemistry Ep. 7 — The Migratory Bird’s Quantum Compass

In the eyes of certain migratory birds is a flavoprotein calld cryptochrome responsible for magnetoreception. When the FAD motif is excited by blue light, a radical pair is formed with one being transported to a tryptophan residue. Once separated, they interconvert between a singlet and triplet state with the oscillations being governed by magnetic fields. The radical pair is so sensitive that it it’s influenced by the Earth’s magnetic field.

A dimetallic uranium complex capable of the catalytic conversion of nitrogen gas (N₂) to ammonia (NH₃) was first successfully synthesized by inorganic chemists at the École Polytechnique Fédérale de Lausanne in Switzerland. While traditional molecular catalysts typically leverage first-row transition metals, f-block elements have received an uptick in research involving difficult catalytic processes and have presented promising results as organometallic catalysts.

Herein, via the transfer of electrons into the N₂’s π* orbitals in a side-on configuration mimetic of naturally-occurring nitrogenase enzymes, Batov, M. S. et. al were successful in deploying their unorthodox uranium-based catalyst to generate ammonia, further verifying Fritz Haber’s claims from the 1900s.
