🦋 IN THE STUDIO WITH Hudson Valley Artist Robert Lucy

How does Robert Lucy draw from found photographs, art history, nature, and his own unconscious to construct layered worlds where identity and transformation are continually in play?

🎨🖌️ In Lucy’s paintings and drawings, the past rarely stays put. Men lifted from another era appear adorned with flowers, coral, jellyfish, and other forms from the natural world; historical conventions of masculinity give way to stranger, freer, more fluid images.

For the latest installment of In the Studio, in partnership with Little Bit Creates, we explore a practice more than four decades in the making with Robert—and the ideas, rituals, humor, and sense of mystery that continue to propel it forward @robertlucyartist

✨ IN THE STUDIO WITH Abstract Painter Jenny Nelson

How do rich intuitive layers and pigments, perfectly balanced with impulsive emotion and a deeply grounded sense of composition, come together in abstract form?

🎨🖌️ Jenny Nelson has dedicated her career to chasing the unknown, teaching others how to lean into the beautiful tension of a blank canvas, the calm in the chaos.

A Hudson Valley resident for nearly three decades, Jenny has exhibited her work nationally and regionally for over 20 years.

Our latest In the Studio feature, in partnership with Little Bit Creates, offers a unique look into Jenny's creative process, how her work has evolved over time, and how she knows a painting is finished @nelsonpainter

🎨 INSIDE+OUT goes "In the Studio With" Multi-Media Artist Christina Varga...

Step into the wonderfully wild world of Catskills artist Christina Varga, where old things find new purpose, glitter catches the light and creativity grows from whatever life places in her path.👩‍🎨

Working with found objects, vintage scraps, discarded materials + everyday treasures, Christina transforms the overlooked into colorful, soulful works that celebrate women, nature and the magic hiding in the ordinary.

A painter, assemblage artist, curator + founder of the Phoenicia Festival of the Arts @phoeniciafestivalofthearts — Christina’s studio is more than a workspace—it’s a gathering place for ideas, connection + creative possibility. Let's take a peek 🫣 below...

💬 I+O: Your work transforms discarded materials — from album covers to paper towels — into art. How do you find the “life” in these overlooked objects?

💬 Christina Varga: “It’s a real problem. I can’t help but see art supplies everywhere, and I tend to collect things like a magpie or something. If it glitters, is opalescent or is holographic at all, I go nuts. Surfaces, frames, and all kinds of things just wink at me constantly. Honestly, the life of an assemblage, collage, jetsam, flotsam artist is overwhelming — but I always tell people, if Vincent Van Gogh had access to these types of materials, he would have used them!”

Come wander through her world of rescued treasures, bold visions and a little bit of beautiful chaos — where inspiration is everywhere, if you’re willing to see it. 🌿✨

👨‍🎨 “Abstract art provides an encounter with form that can strike a chord in the heart and mind of the viewer.” — David Hornung

For our latest “In the Studio With,” we spend an afternoon with acclaimed painter, collage artist, educator + author David Hornung, whose work has helped generations of artists understand the language of color.

From his Woodstock studio, Hornung reflects on a lifetime devoted to painting, the parallels between music and visual art, and why emerging artists should tune out trends and trust their own instincts.

“Figure out what moves and interests you, then dig deep to eventually expose your voice.”

After six decades of painting, he's still chasing questions rather than answers—and that's exactly where the magic happens.

🎨 In our “In the Studio With” series, we step inside the creative spaces of the Hudson Valley artists shaping the region’s cultural landscape — and this time, we’re visiting Kate McGloughlin ✨

A 12th-generation Ulster County native, Kate’s work explores memory, grief, landscape + the layered history beneath the Ashokan Reservoir through richly textured paintings and haunting monotypes.

From painting in sometimes brutal plein-air conditions to creating deeply personal assemblages from family relics, her work is rooted in place, history, and emotional truth.

"Becoming an artist, for me, was a matter of being creatively nurtured and of continuing to make work. It’s a kind of internal drive that makes one have to do it. People have various reasons, but I think the ‘having to do it’ as a life force is what separates an artist from someone who makes work as a hobby." Jennifer Hicks
