The more I’ve planned my first trip to Japan, the more I’ve realised how many little etiquette rules I simply didn’t know

Some I’d heard of, like taking your shoes off and not tipping, but others genuinely surprised me… especially the sushi one 🍣

And I think knowing WHY these things matter makes them so much easier to remember rather than just having a list of rules to follow

So these are 10 bits of Japan etiquette I’ve learnt while planning my first trip, from chopstick etiquette and eating on the go to onsens, photography and restaurant manners

Things I wish I knew before visiting Paris 🇫🇷
Save this for your next trip to Paris.

1. The Eiffel Tower sparkles for 5 minutes every hour after dark — with the final sparkle at midnight. Time it right so you don’t miss it.

2. Buy tickets for the Louvre well in advance and use the Carrousel du Louvre entrance inside the shopping mall — the queues are often much shorter.

3. Many museums (including the Arc de Triomphe) are free on the first Sunday of the month between November and March.

4. The Louvre stays open late on Fridays until 9pm, which can be a much quieter time to visit.

5. The Louvre is also free on the first Friday evening of each month after 6pm (except July and August).

6. Several major museums are closed on Mondays, which can make places like the Louvre much busier that day.

7. The Paris Metro is one of the easiest ways to get around — but always validate your ticket. Inspectors do check and fines are common.

8. Spend a few minutes looking at the metro map before travelling. It’s simple once you understand the lines.

9. Don’t plan every hour. Some of the best moments in Paris happen just wandering the streets and discovering cafés, parks and viewpoints.

10. Paris is huge — don’t try to see everything in a short trip. Pick a few highlights and leave yourself a reason to come back.

Bonus tip:
You don’t need to stand right under the Eiffel Tower for great photos. Places like Trocadéro, Avenue de Camoëns and the surrounding gardens often give much better views with fewer crowds.

If there’s one thing I miss about Japan, it’s the 7-Eleven breakfast runs! 🍇☕️

The giant Muscat grapes, those ridiculously good chocolate cream cakes and the iced lattes! Honestly, I was obsessed!

SAVE this for your visit to Fushimi Inari Taisha ⛩️

One of Kyoto’s most iconic sights, but there are definitely a few things worth knowing before you go…

1️⃣ GO EARLIER THAN YOU THINK

We arrived at around 7:30am and I still managed to get plenty of photos with little to no one in them.

By around 9:45am? VERY different story 😂

If getting those peaceful shots is important to you, I’d personally aim for around 6:30am. I genuinely think that extra hour would have made a big difference.

And if you’re REALLY committed to getting there before the crowds, some people go before the first trains start running and take a taxi, arriving around 4:30–5am! 😳 You’re much more likely to find those famous gates almost completely to yourself at that time.

2️⃣ KEEP WALKING… BUT YOU DON’T HAVE TO REACH THE TOP

Keep walking beyond the famous Senbon Torii and you’ll find more gates, smaller shrines and generally fewer people.

You can hike to the summit, but you don’t have to. I didn’t and still saw SO much.

3️⃣ IT’S FREE TO VISIT

There’s no general admission fee to visit Fushimi Inari Taisha or walk through the torii gates.

4️⃣ GETTING THERE IS REALLY EASY

JR Inari Station is right next to the shrine, while Fushimi-Inari Station on the Keihan Line is around a 5-minute walk.

We took the Keihan Line from Sanjo and it was SO easy.

5️⃣ THE TORII GATES AREN’T JUST DECORATION

The thousands of red torii gates have been donated as offerings by individuals and businesses. Fushimi Inari is associated with prosperity and business success. ⛩️

6️⃣ DON’T BLOCK THE GATES FOR PHOTOS

The paths can be narrow, so be mindful of people trying to pass. The shrine specifically asks visitors not to obstruct worshippers while taking photos or filming.

7️⃣ ALLOW MORE TIME THAN “JUST GETTING THE PHOTO”

There’s much more here than the famous red gates. You’ll find the main shrine, smaller shrines, fox statues and the walk up Mount Inari.

Definitely allow time to explore rather than just getting the photo.

Tokyo Day 4 🇯🇵❤️

Our final full day in Tokyo and the rain was definitely NOT giving up ☔️😂

Started the morning at Meiji Jingu ⛩️ before heading over to a VERY busy Takeshita Street 🌈

A quick stop in the Hello Kitty store 🎀, a new little Pompompurin souvenir 💛 and then on the hunt for the viral food… rainbow toast ✔️ giant candyfloss spotted but abandoned thanks to the rain 😂🍭

Then it was over to Shibuya to say hello to Hachikō 🐕❤️, explore a little more and watch the famous Shibuya Crossing come to life as it got dark 🌃

And finally… Ichiran ramen 🍜 The famous individual booths, ordering exactly how you want your ramen and quite possibly one of my favourite meals in Tokyo! 🤤

Four VERY full days in Tokyo and I feel like we’ve barely scratched the surface 🇯🇵❤️

Tokyo Day 3 🇯🇵❤️ Kamakura + Yokohama

Escaped Tokyo for the day and headed to Kamakura, starting with the Great Buddha at Kōtoku-in 🗿⛩️

Then jumped on the Enoden down to the coast, stopped for lunch with a sea view, before heading back into central Kamakura for a wander around Komachi Street, where I may have picked up a few more souvenirs… 👀😂

Then it was on to Yokohama and the Cup Noodles Museum 🍜 where we learnt all about how instant noodles came about and, obviously, made our own completely custom Cup Noodles to bring home!

Finished the day exploring Yokohama and Chinatown, followed by dinner with live music ❤️

Such a different day from Tokyo and definitely one of my favourites so far 🇯🇵

Next up… back to Tokyo ☔️👀
