🤔 Blends vs. Digraphs — what’s the difference?!

These two phonics terms can be confusing, but there’s a simple way to remember them:

BLENDS = You can hear BOTH sounds.
Think: bl, st, tr, gr, mp

👉 In “stop,” you can hear /s/ AND /t/.

DIGRAPHS = Two letters make ONE sound.
Think: sh, ch, th, wh, ph

👉 In “ship,” the s + h work together to make /sh/.

 A quick teacher/parent tip:
Have your child/student say the sounds slowly. If you can hear each individual sound, you have a blend. If the two letters work together to make one new sound, you have a digraph.

Money can’t buy happiness… but it can buy you a lesson plan. 😂

And honestly, sometimes done-for-you is the happiness.

These small group reading lessons are made to take one more thing off your plate.

You get 30 targeted 3rd grade reading lessons covering skills like:
Main idea & details
Inferences + text evidence
Making connections
Character traits
Figurative language
Author’s purpose
Theme
Text features

And each lesson comes with the actual pieces you need to teach it—a minilesson, reading passage, student resources, activities, graphic organizers, posters, and independent practice.

So instead of spending your Sunday night thinking, “Okay… what am I doing with my intervention group on Tuesday?” 😅

You can grab a lesson, print it, and teach.

I made these for small groups, but they work beautifully for whole-group lessons, too!

Basically: less planning, more teaching. ❤️

Comment PLANS and I’ll send them to you!

No expense reports.
No business casual.
No cute office coffee runs.

Just phonics, spelling, comprehension, decodable texts, and approximately 27 kids asking what page we’re on. 😂 taken in St. Louis, Missouri by @littleliteracystudio

Our older students still need explicit instruction and practice with spelling patterns, syllable types, prefixes, suffixes, roots, word parts, and all of those little patterns that help them become stronger readers and spellers.

And honestly, this is one of the reasons I love creating resources that can be used across multiple grade levels☺️.

A lot of my resources aren’t meant to be used for one specific grade and then forgotten about. You can use them with younger students for direct instruction and extra support, and with older students for review, intervention, small groups, or independent practice.

Because just because a student is in 3rd, 4th, or 5th grade doesn’t mean they’ve magically mastered all of the foundational literacy skills. 😉

Sometimes they just need a little more practice.

And that’s totally okay!

I’ve spent years building something I really love, and if I want more teachers to find it, I have to be willing to put myself out there a little. 🫣

So here I am, figuring it out as I go🤪

So hi, I’m Lindsey 👋🏻 — a former elementary teacher turned SAHM who creates literacy resources for elementary teachers. I have 250+ resources in my shop now, and I’m just trying to get them in front of the teachers who could actually use them. 🤍

So if you’re new here, hi! I’m so glad you’re here. 🫶🏻

And if you’ve been here for a while…thanks for letting me be a little cringe on the internet. 😂
