Record 60 is “Roots of Rhythm & Ruin” by Ben Chidgey. 💀🌳

This one takes the idea of painting a vinyl record and launches it into an entirely different dimension.

Ben has built a tiny world on top of the record, completely in 3D. At its centre is a huge clay skull, slowly being reclaimed by moss and trees, with tiny figures working all around it. It looks as though the skull has is part of a pond or water feature, with figures carrying buckets and doing their work and landscaping around it. Some are carrying crates, some digging and working the land, and a couple have even climbed into the trees.

It feels like a civilisation has sprung up amongst the ruins of what came before. Nature growing back, people carrying on, life continuing around the remains of the past. The more closely you look, the more little details you find.

“Roots of Rhythm & Ruin” is such an imaginative use of the record, and definitely one you need to see from more than one angle to fully appreciate.

It’s up for auction now in support of Children’s Hospice South West. The Galabid link is in our bio at the top of this page. 🌿

Meet the Artist: Ben Chidgey (Little Ouchie)

Ben has always been a doodler. Being creative gives his busy ADHD brain somewhere to settle, and over the years that simple love of making things has taken him in all sorts of directions.

Graffiti came first. After moving to Glastonbury, Ben became part of M.O.A, which he remembers as the roots of the town’s graff community and a time of his life he absolutely loved. He was also one of the artists behind the original Welcome to Glastonbury mural, alongside DMK, Sikoh, Sym and John Mason. 🎨

Back then, inspiration often came from messy nights out, hallucinations and a general love of making things look a little bit odd. Tattooing came along almost by chance. While painting in a friend’s tattoo studio, Ben was offered the opportunity to learn, and he went for it.

These days, he’s better known as tattoo artist Little Ouchie. His work has gradually moved towards a more abstract style, with pop art, graphic imagery and logos all finding their way into the mix. After several years at Exclusive Tattoos, Ben opened his own Glastonbury studio, Chapter 3, where he continues to tattoo and find new ways to create. ✨

For Vinyl & Valour, that was with clay.

Wanting a change from his usual work, Ben picked up a material he hadn’t really worked with before and started experimenting. The result is a sculptural record designed to look interesting from every angle, while also reflecting on some of what’s happening in the world around us.

And that’s one of the things we’ve loved about seeing all these records come back. Give an artist an old vinyl and the freedom to do whatever they like with it, and you genuinely have no idea what you’re going to get. Ben’s is definitely one we weren’t expecting, and we love that. 💚🙌🏼
