Phillip Guston. Hand and Stick, oil on canvas, 166.7x202.2cm, 1971. In a conversation with Guston’s daughter Musa Mayer in 2019, Scott Timberg observed that Guston seems to have opened the door for neo-Expressionism in painting, to the politicized 1970s, and to the greater respectability of underground comics. Mayer observed that her father’s new paintings of strange hooded figures were termed ‘crude’ and ‘simple-minded’ by the critics. A scathing New York Times review referred to him as ‘A Mandarin Pretending to be a Stumblebum.’ She went on to comment: ‘My father despaired at the doctrinaire state of an art world that expected him to endlessly refine the abstractions that had brought him critical acclaim a decade earlier. ‘There is something ridiculous and miserly in the myth that we inherit from abstract art,’ Guston wrote. ‘That painting is autonomous, pure and for itself, and therefore we habitually analyze its ingredients and define its limits. But painting is ‘impure.’ It is the adjustment of ‘impurities’ which forces painting’s continuity.’ #painting #guston @hauserwirth by @littlespaceseven

Ed Ruscha. Trademark Study, ink on tracing paper, 20.8x34.8cm, 1962. Ruscha’s Trademark (most famously Large Trademark with Eight Spotlights, 1962) is a defining Pop Art painting that elevates commercial branding into high art. The iconic canvas depicts the Twentieth Century-Fox movie logo receding in sharp perspective, illuminated by bright yellow spotlights against a dark, cinematic background.#art #edruscha #artcurator @christiesinc by @littlespaceseven

The Haas Brothers: Uncanny Valley at Museum of Arts and Design in New York. ⚡️⚡️From trippy mushroom sculptures to fantastical beasts, this retrospective plunges visitors into the exuberant, uncanny worlds of twin artists Nikolai and Simon Haas. Largely self-taught, the duo’s practice is rooted in material experimentation. The surrealistic, animistic, and zoomorphic, as well as humor and irreverence, abound within the Haas Brothers’ animal kingdom, hinting at the deeper well of emotions the artists are seeking to unleash and explore. Uncanny Valley is a place strangely familiar but never seen before. #art #design @madmuseum #newyork by @littlespaceseven

Who doesn’t need a unicorn? ⚡️⚡️ Stefan Rinck, Party animal, 2022. Rinck’s stone figures form a motley and comical community of, for the most part, animals, chimeras and monsters. They wear costumes and masks; are endowed with particular symbols or characteristics, some bear the names of heroes of Greek mythology or of legend. Rinck’s sculpted figures make up a discordant but related assembly of non-humans: they come from elsewhere, an archaic imaginary world, woven from myths and legends. With his collection of fauna, the artist is using a technique typical of the Middle Ages: sculpting his figures directly from stone. @stefanrinck #art #sculpture #contemporaryart by @littlespaceseven
