The meeting runs long. The inbox doesn’t stop. And in the corner of the desk, there’s a hand half the size of yours.

The whole point of putting it there is the remind you of what you're working towards.

Their handprint on a display-quality basketball, set on a solid walnut base, made at home in about 15 minutes. Then it goes to work with you and stays.

Trophies are for the kid. This one’s for you.

Most kids won’t remember the afternoon you pressed their hand onto a football. You will. That’s why it goes somewhere you’ll walk past every day: the console, the desk, the shelf by the door.

The first kid gets a filled-out baby book. The second kid gets a sticky note that says “do this later.”

This fix takes one afternoon per kid. Each one gets their own display-quality ball, their own print, and their own spot on the shelf. Basketball for one, football for the other, walnut or maple for both. Two hands that will never match, side by side.

By January, most holiday gifts have found a spot in a closet, a drawer, or a bin in the garage.

This one goes on a side table, the mantle, or your desk. A display-quality basketball with their handprint, set on a solid walnut base, made at home in one afternoon and wrapped for the grandparent, the new dad, or the coach on your list. (Football family? Same kit, on a football.)

Most autographed balls were signed by someone famous. This one was signed by someone who can't write their name yet.

One press of their hand on a display-quality basketball, a coat of brush-on sealant, and it goes up on a solid maple base where everyone can see it. No card show. No certificate of authenticity. You were there when it was signed.

The pumpkins get about six weeks. This gets all 52.

A child’s handprint on a display-quality football, set on solid walnut. You make it at home in one afternoon: press the print, let the ink dry, brush on the sealant. Then it stays out all year. No bin, no storage tote, no spot in the garage. (Basketball family? Same kit, on a basketball.)

Save this for the grandparent who says they don’t need anything.

They’re right, mostly. But a handprint on a football, sitting on solid maple next to the candlesticks, is the one thing on the mantel she’ll point to when people come over. It takes one afternoon and comes with everything: the ball, a child-safe ink pad, a prep wipe, and the brush-on sealant.

Every dad has a shelf. The books he finished, a ball from a game he went to, the whistle from coaching his kid’s team.

This belongs on it. A 5-inch display-quality ball with your kid’s handprint, on solid walnut. $44.99, free US shipping, link in bio.

Tag the coach dad who’d put this between his shelf.

Their hand is bigger than this now. It grabs the car door handle, the remote, your phone when you're not looking.

But the first thing you see every morning is the print from when it wasn't.

A display-quality football with their handprint on the white panel, on a solid walnut display base. Made to sit where you'll actually see it.

Most baby gifts end up in a drawer. The outfit they wore twice, the hat from the hospital, the card you meant to frame. The drawer gets a little harder to close every month.

This one goes on top of the dresser. A display-quality basketball with their handprint on the white panel, on a solid maple display base. Everything's in one box, and the whole kit takes about 15 minutes, not counting dry time.

You keep buying the next size up.

The next size of shoes. The next size of pajamas. The jersey that hung to their knees in August and fits now.

Their hand is doing the same thing. You just don't notice until you find an old drawing and hold it up next to them.

The handprint on the shelf is the one thing in the house that never needs the next size.

My own childhood handprint is in a baby book that never gets pulled out. I wanted Hadley's on something I love, somewhere I'd be proud to show it off at the office. That's where this kit came from.

The maple football kit works like this. Press their hand on the white panel (the ink part takes about ninety seconds), let it dry at least two hours, brush on the sealant, and set it on the solid maple base. About 15 minutes of work, not counting dry time.

Quentin and I put every kit together by hand in Austin. We ruined more than a dozen balls figuring that process out, so the hard part's already done.
