I am a first responder of many sorts and a father of a small zombie; thus tragedy resides both at work and home

My unpopular opinion: if you need a 30 round magazine to spray 2 home intruders, you're a bad shot and shouldn't own a firearm. Also, regular long guns and handguns should be the standard considering that full and semi-auto weapons are just used for Americans to kill groups of Americans. There's also the fact that you or your loved one are more likely to be shot and killed by your gun than any aggressor. Guns are like pitbulls off-leash next to playgrounds.
