Uphaar 2025- A Gift of Tenacity, Courage and Love✨

Few weeks ago, our Kathak community came together to offer something truly special:

Uphaar, a holiday concert created with months of dedication, courage, and joy.

Even weeks later, the impact of that evening continues to resonate.

Uphaar wasn’t just a performance.
It was a gift—to the audience, to our families, and perhaps most profoundly, to the dancers themselves.

For many of these women, Kathak entered their lives in adulthood—after careers, families, responsibilities, and full calendars.

Yet they showed up week after week, learning, unlearning, laughing, doubting, trying again… and ultimately discovering parts of themselves they didn’t know were waiting.

Those 40 magical minutes on stage were the culmination of months of effort:
• hours of practice
• moments of vulnerability
• breakthroughs in confidence
• and the quiet courage to begin something new, later in life

Watching them dance with such honesty and strength was a reminder that art has no age. Growth has no age. Joy has no age.

Their families saw it too—many with tears, many with awe, all with pride.
And in that moment, each dancer became an ambassador of Kathak, carrying forward a tradition with grace and authenticity.

As a teacher, I couldn’t be more proud.
As a community, we couldn’t have asked for a more meaningful holiday gift.

Here’s to courage, to creativity, and to the power of beginning—at any stage of life.
Uphaar was our offering. And what we received in return was even greater.

💫 Grateful for this journey. Inspired for what comes next. taken in Kirkland, Washington by @liveanklets

Ardhaang - a song in praise of Lord Shiva (the God of dance and the destroyer of evil).

Lord Shiva is described embodying the male and female energies (the Ardha-Nareshwar)

March 8, 2024 was a unique day as it celebrated International Women's Day and MahaShivratri (the Hindu festival honoring Lord Shiva and Goddess Parvati).
This was very symbolic for me as it reinforced that each one of us has all the energies within us to be empowered to be and do good.

Lyrics - Pandit Birju Maharaj
Vocals- Anirban Bhattacharyya @anirban_themusicwala
Sarangi - Pankaj Mishra @pankajmsarangi
Tabla - Chaz Hastings
Sitar - Sampada Bhalerao @bhalerao_sampada
Flute - Satyajit Limaye
Choreography - Sujata Banerjee @sujatabanerjeesbdc
Visual Artist - Rajib Chakraborty @rchaks taken in Meydenbauer Center by @liveanklets
