Thank you to all who came along and experienced JSUK HAN’s ‘Organs, Breathes, Salt’ last week. Friday’s evening performance was activated live by JSUK, Sage Pbbbt (ritual vocalist) and Raras Sukardi (bass clarinetist).

‘Both real-time audio feedback and field recordings gathered directly around Fremantle are played simultaneously, projected through a 10-channel multichannel sound system using SPAT, a spatial audio system. Multiple variables are collected and feed into each other continuously: real-time Fremantle weather data (wind speed, wind direction, humidity, temperature and atmospheric pressure), flocking algorithms — a kind of digital murmuration — and the measured resonant frequencies of the Naval Store building itself, all fed into a feedback loop in constant circulation. Because these three systems interact continuously, the sound is never the same twice

My practice is grounded in the history of feedback and systems-based art — Alvin Lucier, John Cage, and the broader tradition of site-specific sound work. Philosophically I am drawn to ideas around self-organisation, circular structure and repetition — Deleuze’s thinking on difference and repetition, Zhuangzi, the feedback loop as a model for how things persist and transform over time..’- JSUK HAN

Co-presented by Vessel and Walyalup Fremantle Arts Centre.

We thank our event sponsors Willoughby Wines, Otherside Brewing and Lightning MInds for the ongoing support.

[PLAP 2023] 《Logistic Feedback》

Resistance to Sustain: Physical Feedback and De-Performance
This project explores the materiality of sound through a closed-loop system of physical feedback. By stripping away the air that typically mediates sound, the setup creates a direct dialogue between contact microphones and transducers (contact speakers). At the core of this system, physical objects—such as drum heads or metal strings—act not merely as resonators, but as active agents that filter, shape, and dictate the trajectory of the feedback.

My approach to performance is rooted in the question: How does one refrain from playing?

1 The world we live in is utterly seamless.
2 A world where every question demands an instant answer, and every input is quantified into a predictable output.
3 Within this vast grid, where neither friction nor delay is permitted, time and memory evaporate all too easily.
4 This one-way world is not tender.
5 It relentlessly extracts resources, and the velocity of data cannot be stopped.
6 And so, I choose to disconnect myself from this rigid power grid, from this script of acceleration.

Delighted to share the first instalment of the stunning documentation captured during the opening night performance for JSUK HAN’s ‘Organs, Breathes, Salt,’ presented by Vessel and Walyalup Fremantle Arts Centre.

This event featured live performances by JSUK HAN, ritual vocalist Sage Pbbbt, and bass clarinetist Raras Sukardi. Each artist entered a direct dialogue with the installation, their voices and tones absorbed into the building's resonant frequencies. Moving through the feedback system, their contribution left behind new sonic crystallisations.

‘Organs, Breathes, Salt’ emerged from the ongoing reciprocal Artist in Residence exchange between Walyalup Fremantle Arts Centre and Incheon Art Platform, and was presented at Vessel, located at the Naval Store.

This is Part 1 of 3.

This week we’ve been living inside JSUK HAN’s Organs, Breathes, Salt, watching the installation and the space transform around us. We’re thrilled to share the result with you tomorrow night — here’s a first look.

Tomorrow’s opening of Organs, Breathes, Salt will be activated by live performances by JSUK HAN, Sage Pbbbt (ritual vocalist) and Raras Sukardi (bass clarinetist). Each performer enters into direct conversation with the installation — not performing over it, but alongside it. Their voices and tones move through the feedback system, absorbed into the resonant frequencies of the building, leaving behind new crystallisations.

Vessel and Walyalup Fremantle Arts Centre present: ‘Organs, Breathes, Salt’ by JSUK HAN

A site-specific sound installation in which the Naval Store becomes a living organ. Acoustic feedback loops are generated and modulated by interconnected systems: real-time Fremantle weather data — wind speed, humidity, temperature and atmospheric pressure — flocking algorithms that govern the collective behaviour of sound across space, and the resonant frequencies of the microphones and the building itself. Found objects suspended from the ceiling trusses act as speaker units, connected by cables radiating from a central control system. The installation evolves slowly and unpredictably over the exhibition period, accumulating and shifting like salt itself.

‘Organs, Breathes, Salt’ is an outcome from the ongoing Walyalup Fremantle Arts Centre and Incheon Art Platform Artist in Residence reciprocal exchange presented at Vessel, located at the Naval Store.

Live performance opening night:
Friday 24th April 2026, Doors 6pm, Performance 7pm
JSUK HAN will be collaborating with Raras Sukardi (clarinettist) and Sage Pbbbt (ritual vocalist) during the live performance.

Sound installation open:
Saturday 25th April, 1-7pm
Sunday 26th April, 1-7pm
Audiences are invited to view the site-specific installation and JSUK HAN will be present to discuss the residency exchange and project.

JSUK HAN (b.1990) | #monoh #ambisonic #generativeart

JSUK HAN is a sound artist based in Korea who looks at ‘system’ as a large format/rule that can be transformed into a module or open source, ultimately a platform for other creatives to participate in.

The core of his practice comes from generative art and mono-ha, configured by the feedback loop created by mechanical objects like speakers, mic, and other sound equipment he collects as memoirs. He traces the characteristics of each element to translate signals into sound waves or vibrations that are not often observed in our daily lives, seeing these inputs and outputs as a form of dialogue. He then interacts with them to embrace and evolve them as experiential art pieces.

For his recent work <YoungSonic: Nidifying the Sonic Creatures> presented at @unfoldxplatform, he built a sonic architecture with layers of audio channels using ambisonics, forming virtual speaker arrays within the structural piece he constructed. This dome acted not only as a stage for his performances but also as the sound landscape the audience could freely explore, built upon the algorithms that often mirror chaos theory and swarm behaviors in nature.

Though he comes from a sculpture background (BFA in sculpture at Seoul National University), he has always been interested in adding kinetic interactiveness with mechanical development. After earning his MFA in Sound Art from SAIC, he has exhibited and performed at Nam June Paik Art Center, ARKO, OCI Museum, and Incheon Art Platform, among many others, and is currently expanding his field actively in collaboration with other fields, such as architecture, circus, DJ, and sub-culture.
