They’re back 🌸

The cherry blossom bloom is one of my favorite times of year in PDX, despite only lasting a few weeks of the year. Over the past 5 years, I’ve gone down to photograph the cherry blossoms on the waterfront 4 of those 5 years and 3 of those years were all on March 22nd.

In my experience, the majority of the cherry blossom trees in the Portland region seem to reach full bloom roughly 1-2 weeks before the cherry blossom trees at the Japanese American Historical Plaza on the waterfront (pictured). We’re seeing that full bloom through most of the city right now, which means we’re about 1-2 weeks out from full bloom on the waterfront.

I believe this means we’re on track to reach a peak bloom on my favorite lucky cherry blossom day of March 22nd. I also did a little checking around online and found some other sources that believe March 22nd to be peak bloom.

If you like the photos and want to look at the cherry blossoms year-round, please check out the link in my bio as they are available for purchase :)

P.s. I’m not an expert on the cherry blossoms, but just a random guy who is mildly obsessed with them. taken in Portland, Oregon by @livepdxofficial

Who are we?

LivePDX is a growing community of people who live in PDX! Our team at LivePDX is actually super small (just me and my absolutely incredible assistant, Elizabeth). We celebrate all things Portland, specifically focusing on supporting local businesses and connecting Portlanders and visitors of PDX with food, drinks and activities they’ll enjoy.

We are small and weird, with the best of intentions - kind of like Portland. We support local Portland-area businesses primarily for free! Sometimes we’ll promote larger local organizations that we are fans of to help pay the bills, but the majority of the content we make is done entirely pro bono for small mom and pop shops :)

We also throw fun events that are just meant to be an affordable and fun way to build community and have a good time! We’ve got a Summer Kick Off party that we’ll be announcing in a few weeks and a Halloween Bash later in Fall of this year!

To everyone that has supported us so far in our endeavor to help Portland flourish, THANK YOU! And to everyone just joining in, WELCOME - we’re glad you’re here.

Fall time in PDX 🍂

The Fall season really is a magical time Portland - the array of colors on the Marquam hillside, the crisp morning air and even those crunchy lil leaves. Perfect weather to cozy up inside and binge your favorite shows. Maybe make a soup or something. Put on a sweater without actually sweating. Idk guys, it’s just really nice time of year.

Cocktail Bars w/ Great Food 🔥 part 1

I’ve decided to start a small series of videos featuring cocktail bars in PDX with genuinely great food! Please don’t hesitate to drop your suggestions in the comments!

Our first feature goes to @bellwetherbarco who makes fantastic cocktails, but also has a seriously great food menu to match. They are the sister bar to @barloonportland which also (no surprise here) makes excellent food!

The food and the drinks here at Bellwether Bar are both a large part of what makes this spot a favorite among local Portlanders, but the ambience is something that truly needs to be studied. Dark woods and a distinct coziness that manages to never feel claustrophobic or stuffy. The decor and overall vibe here makes it the kind of bar that you could see someone wearing a suit and tie at the bar and a group of friends in sweatpants and a T-shirt in the booth. Neither would appear particularly out of place. Definitely recommend trying this one

The Portland Crows 🐦‍⬛

It’s still a bit early in the season, but I would recommend keeping an eye out over the coming months (especially November and December) for the crows making their way to the Westside in huge numbers. The first few clips in this video were from the last few weeks, but most of the clips were taken over the last few years during November/December

Hope everyone is enjoying their first weeks of Fall - Halloween is just around the corner… Announcement coming soon 🎃👀

Cheapest matcha in PDX? 👀

I heard a rumor that @makomatchamill grinds/mills their own matcha so obviously I had to check it out! Their prices are insanely low - probably the cheapest matcha in PDX, but I could be wrong about this. Regardless, the drinks are wonderful and they have a fantastic atmosphere in downtown right next to Masu Sushi! Highly recommend visiting :)

Jersey Style Pizza in Portland 🍕

First time trying @lombardospizzeriapdx and I’m already planning my next visit.

The ricotta & red onion is their most popular pie so we had to get one, but I asked what the most classic Jersey style pie is and he said the Bar Pie, which is essentially an ultra thin cheese pizza with the crispiest thin crust of my life.

The ricotta & red onion was great, but that bar pie was the highlight for me! I’ve never spent time in Jersey, so I can’t personally vouch for its authenticity, but I thought the pizza was damn good.

Anyone who knows Jersey style Pizza been here before? Let me know what you think of it!

It’s Spooky Season once again 🎃

@frogpondfarmoregon is easily one of best pumpkin patches in the Portland Metro Region. They have tons of games and activities spread across the farm and is a family-friendly, all-ages welcome kind of experience.

Definitely make sure to check out their famous llama obstacles and their pumpkin patch where llamas graze among the pumpkins. However, they’ve also got a pretty epic selection of bounce houses which I didn’t feature in the video this year, but definitely recommend for the little ones. The corn maze is a great time and you’ve obviously got to feed the animals while you’re there. Loads of fun to be had this Halloween season!

New Coffee Spot ☕️

@cafeyoungi is a pop up serving delicious coffee and matcha drinks! They make their butter tteok from scratch and I’m telling you, they taste even better than they look. I came for the lattes, but that butter tteok has me in a freakin chokehold

Many of you may recognize the owner @yvetteciao who has been a local foodie in Portland for years! She has a page where she shares hidden gems and restaurants around the metro region, typically supporting small local businesses. I think this is a great opportunity to support someone who has uplifted the local business community in PDX for years - and get some tasty drinks in the process

Located inside the Riverwalk Cafe, please check out their IG for days/times that the pop up is open!

One of Portland’s best coffee shops ☕️

@sorosoro_cafe opened their doors in 2019, braved the pandemic and went on to become one of the highest rated coffee shops in Portland.

Known for their incredibly beautiful coffee drinks that somehow taste even better than they look, Soro Soro also makes some top tier pastries that are beautiful just like their drinks.

They’ve also got some of their Halloween decorations out already which I personally love to see! We’re starting to really see that Fall weather shift in the city this week and I’m here for it

3 spots on NW 21st

Breakfast at @sweetbaconcafe to start off the day! These guys are one of my favorite spots in town, located in the old Paley’s Place - they’ve really made a name for themselves over the past couple of years. Delicious Asian-inspired brunch dishes and a cozy ambience that I absolutely love. Featured in the video are the Dungeness Crab Benedict and the Spicy Basil with Chicken which are both excellent - I also highly recommend their Chicken Katsu Curry and a dish they call the Hangover (if you love spicy food)🔥

Lunch at @bhunarestaurant for an insanely crispy fried chicken sandwich. I legitimately believe this is the best fried chicken sandwich in the city. Some might find it surprising that it’s being served up at an Indian restaurant, but if you know chef Deepak, he refuses conform to the typical Indian dishes with his menu and is all about creating a unique experience

Dinner at @saywhen.saywhen for a fun little cocktail and some tasty shareable dishes. This one actually leans more cocktail bar than restaurant, but I thought it would be fun to include because it’s still relatively new!

One of my favorite parts of living in PDX is the amount of high quality food and drink options we have. It’s not uncommon to find clusters of incredible places all located within a few blocks of each other.

Let’s talk about bagels 🥯

Portland, Oregon has one of the best food scenes of any city on the planet and is exceptionally remarkable when taking its size into consideration. Dwarfed by major cities around the world and yet still one of the best pound-for-pound food cities in the game.

HOWEVER, we have never been known for our bagel scene. In fact, I’ve historically felt quite disappointed in Portland-area bagel shops.

FRET NOT MY DEAR FRIENDS. For there is a new dawn on the horizon. With quality bagel shops like @sincerelybagel (featured) and @pipsqueakbagels opening just in the last year. Shops like these give me hope that we may one day be known as a top tier bagel city.

Side note: I showed up completely unannounced around noon so they had sold out of a few of their bagels. Sincerely Bagels is delicious and they are also popular, so there’s a good chance they’ll sell out of certain bagels if you don’t get there early-ish in the day
