C-suite by day. Traded NYC for real land and a cozy life. New homeowner. Chaotic cat mom. Building something softer, one renovation at a time.

The part of relocating and homeownership that we don’t talk about enough. 🤎

One of the biggest reasons I moved from New York to Maryland was because I wanted to experience homeownership. I wanted something of my own.

There’s always been this debate about renting versus owning, and particularly in the Black community, we’ve been taught that homeownership is a necessary step toward building generational wealth. And while there’s truth to the opportunities that ownership can provide, I’m realizing that the conversation isn’t nearly that simple.

Because there’s something to be said about convenience. About having a super to call when something breaks, not worrying about shoveling snow, and being able to walk around the corner to your favorite restaurant. As a lifelong New Yorker, those are things I genuinely cherished.

And now, here I am. A homeowner in Maryland, grateful for what I’ve accomplished but also struggling with the transition from city life to the suburbs.

We celebrate the new house, the closing day, and the fresh start, but we rarely talk about the emotional roller coaster that follows. The loneliness, the unfamiliarity, and the realization that the life you worked toward may still take some getting used to.

I’m learning that you can be proud of a decision and still struggle with the changes that come with it.

Maryland has so much to offer, and I know I’ll grow to appreciate this chapter. But right now, I’m living in the in-between. Missing the convenience of my old life while trying to embrace the possibilities of this new one.

And maybe the bigger lesson is that renting versus owning shouldn’t be about what society tells us success looks like. It should be about what actually works for our lives.

That’s part of what Live Rebuild Repeat is about. Not just showing the beautiful parts of rebuilding, but being honest about everything in between.

Have you ever made a major life change that you knew was right for you but still struggled to adjust to?

Growing up, we had that room.

The formal living room. The “look but don’t touch” room. The room reserved for distinguished guests, with furniture that stayed perfect and cushions we children knew better than to sit on.

Anytime we got a little too close, my mother would hit us with her famous phrase:

“Regarde avec les yeux, sentir par le nez, ne touche pas.”

Look with your eyes. Smell with your nose. Do not touch.

And trust me… we did NOT touch. 😂

I always thought that when I had my own home, I’d carry on the tradition. I’d have my own beautiful formal room that stayed pristine, waiting for company important enough to sit in it.

Then one day I thought…

Wait a minute.

This is MY house.

Why am I saving a room in my own home for somebody else to enjoy?

So here I am. Sitting in my formal living room. By myself. Reading a good book. On the good furniture.

Because rebuilding your life sometimes means questioning the little rules you inherited, too.

Wear the good dress.
Use the good dishes.
Light the expensive candle.
Eat in the formal dining room, even if it’s just you.
And for goodness’ sake, sit on your own damn couch.

Stop saving the beautiful parts of your life for company.

You are the distinguished guest.

Enjoy the home you worked for. Enjoy the life you built.

I really picked up my whole life and said, “Yeah, let me try Maryland.” 😂

Leaving Brooklyn and buying my first home has been one of the biggest changes of my life, and I was NOT prepared for everything that came after the closing table.

New state. New house. New lifestyle. Contractors. Renovations. Decorating. Amazon and Wayfair packages showing up like I have unlimited funds. And wildlife I had previously only seen on TV casually appearing in my yard.

Live. Rebuild. Repeat. is where I’m documenting all of it: figuring out homeownership, rebuilding my life in a new state, making this house feel like home, finding my people and my places, and learning county life one unexpected experience at a time.

No expert over here. I’m figuring it out in real time.

If you’re starting over, buying a home, relocating, decorating, renovating, or just want to see how a Brooklyn girl adjusts to all THIS…

Come along for the ride.
