Mothers Day! Celebrating life giving of 2 kids, pets (RIP Vince) and a ever evolving audio hoard. Being a Mum is easily the best thing I've ever gotten the privilege to do.

Full credit to my own Mother for starting my psychoacoustic path. A single Mum who spent 4 weeks wages on Marantz components and speakers from Manawatu TV and Sound in 1985. I was blessed to start training my ears back then with her collection. She used music to transcend and expand, and taught me the same. In our state house with a high end system, blasting Pink Floyd and the first 3 Led Zeppelin albums. Real deals like me and her knew the albums released after that were lame. She scoffed at everything on 92.2 FM, calling it bubblegum music. Selling out was a concept I understood from very young. Back then in Palmy people must have thought Mum was nuts. She was a true working class, feminist, rebel. Who she was ,was who she was. As an adult I can see how much bravery she showed.

When I got older, I skipped school and played her Dire Straits CDs and classical records while she was at work. Endlessly annoying her by messing with the EQ settings. I sat on axis through the Sultans of Swing 10 times in a row, forcing my brain to concentrate. Like Mum said, go where the sound is in your head, imagine it like a picture, and be there. I tried to listen and “ just let go”. To just observe. Teaching me what a sound scape was, when technically she didnt know what one was herself. My brain was prepped for mindfulness through music, now common recommended practice for concentration issues. Loudly claiming Metallica's Black album was too commercial came naturally to me. My Mum was 30years before her time in so many ways. How she brought me up, to hear music completely and respect it still steers me right today when the roads are rough.

Cheers to you Ma, you gave me a lifelong gift that money couldn't buy. Golden ears, elite taste and never questioning if as a woman I belong in sound or the world.

Aotearoas notorious for damp, and as much as I want to be all chill, need to come and move all these to dry storage. Honestly, its a mental illness at this point, but Im OK with it. Could be so much worst! Crimes or drugs or both. Keeps me entertamed and interesting ( to myself 😇) by @livewire.wav

VIP section of the largest-to-date Highlife entertainments NYE gig. All audio supplied by me and Sam, with @jeremiah_sb_nz from @new_tone_sound manning the DJ booth all night. We took 12 CDJs to Matakana dry-hired by Disco Dan (IYKYK) and went through them all during the show. Sorry, Dan! All other gear dry-hired from Oce. Fire up with Morning Phase by Beck as always. Never in my time of Line Arrays have I heard something as good as this. My all time fav hang. Dom Dolla domain Sydney Nov 2024. This sparked the brainworm of really asking if K or GSL is better out FOH. To me, d&b in general seems tricky to get right, but you can hear the results. Whereas K is more robust and sounds more reliably good under most users .Opening this can of worms might be insane, but I want to know! by @livewire.wav

I had Maki festival locked and loaded to celebrate 20 years of @nzmusicmonth in May 2020. At the end of March we went into the first of many lock downs, and the festival had to be cancelled. Promoting a gig is like having a newborn. You want to keep checking if they are breathing or not. Signs of life with ticket sales, productive contract meetings and hitting target reach on the advertising stats. The financial risk hangs heavy. I would check in on the latest campaign hourly, did that convert to a follower or sale? Is the baby still alive?

It would be easy for me to be bitter, since hours of work were seemingly wasted. Instead, I choose to be deeply thankful for the experience. Relationships with colleagues old and new that were enriched and tightened. Now, I hold an overall empathy for this industry that can only be learned through lived experience. Also, I would do it again as soon as the bank said yes. This industry is gritty and requires blind faith and real passion to survive in it.

Since Maki and the lock downs it doesn't seem like live music either here in Sydney or back home in Aotearoa has found its footing again. Punters seem hesitant to go out, venues are closing and promoters are taking on less risk. I can see the valid points from all sides, but it's a cycle that needs breaking. Moving forward, strong advocacy for our industry is needed within councils and governments. Live music is incredibly powerful and worth fighting for. We can't hear no, and just not put the show on anymore. We have to keep asking till it's a yes. Well that's my plan anyway 😇 by @livewire.wav

Recently, my uncle returned from the world-famous Isle of Man TT, where he raced his classic Norton, another bucket list tick. Health or life challenges aside, he made the impossible happen. Retirement does not look like something he will be participating in. When my own outrageous dreams look too big, like getting another gig created and on sale, this is who I think about. Not giving up is in my genes, even if it takes time. It is a lifetime well spent when you are genuinely driven by your passions—not sidelined, but full turbo in the mix. Ric placed second in the world on that green machine little Chanty is sitting on, hurtling through the finish line with a gearbox jammed in second on a self-funded and built sidecar, racing against six-man American and UK teams with endless sponsorship cash. Just one of the many tales from his remarkable life. Being the underdog can be a secret weapon. I am so proud of you, Richard. An inspiring force since day one, always showing that life is for living, not just surviving. You prove that if you are mad enough, you can take your passion to the limit. Maybe a moto racing music fest is on the cards! by @livewire.wav
