Every great song starts with a story. Meet your 2026 Jam Camp West words & writing faculty.

Berel Alexander · Words & Writing — Oakland-based singer-songwriter, front man, and multi-instrumentalist raised on the rural northern coast of California. Berel had the honor of seeing Ray Charles perform live at age nine, and never forgot the energy in that room.

That spark turned into 25 years of songwriting, performing, producing, and teaching across every corner of the craft. From viral YouTube performances to the Oakland rap battle scene to the Bay Area R&B and soul stages, Berel has lived the full arc of what it means to find your voice and share it with the world. At Jam Camp West, he brings all of the craft, the story, and the belief that every young person has something worth saying. All About Jazz

Move your body. Write your truth. Meet your 2026 Jam Camp West dance & songwriting faculty.

Charles Simon · Dance & Songwriting — Bay Area born and raised, Charles Simon has been part of the Jam Camp West community since 2008, first as a camper at age 13, now as a faculty member, educator, and mentor.

That journey from student to teacher isn't just a detail, it's the whole story. A dedicated artist and mentor, Charles has committed their life to uplifting the next generation, those behind them in age but ahead in future. They teach dance throughout the Bay Area and are deeply rooted in the region's artist-activist community, with plans to further their impact pursuing a master's in education at UC Berkeley. At Jam Camp West, Charles brings lived experience, artistic fire, and proof that this community changes lives.

Every great ensemble starts with someone who knows how to hold it together. Meet your 2026 Jam Camp West ensemble faculty.

Simon Russell · Instrumental Ensembles — Oakland-based multi-instrumentalist, vocalist, pianist, and educator with nearly four decades of Bay Area soul running through his veins. Simon came up in Oakland learning from local legends, mentored by Rafael Grinage, bassist for Earl Fatha Hines and Odetta, who taught him one rule: "no note should be wasted."

He's since performed with The James Brown Band, Pete Escovedo, Anika Noni Rose, El DeBarge, and honored Quincy Jones on Black History Month. In 2018 he founded Notes Music Academy and Notes For Change, a nonprofit dedicated to free instruments and lessons for underserved communities. At Jam Camp, he brings that same mission: every kid in the room deserves to be heard.

Seven days. Ages 10–17. All skill levels welcome.
