I have been out in my city of New Bedford, for the past 4 days protesting and it really made me check myself. I initially showed up to stand in solidarity and join the protests, but as the days went on I just knew that it was something I wanted to be a part of and help organize. I realized that my so-called activism was just lazy. I was hoping that someone else was going to do the work, and make the things I believe in happen and that is not the case. My point is, we need to really get off our ass. Hard work needs to be done, and as afraid and nervous as I am to get involved in a movement that has gotten my ancestors killed, I am tired and refuse to stay complacent any longer. Change doesn’t happen overnight, and it also doesn’t happen if you wait for someone else to be the change you seek. I don’t have all the answers, but I am trying to learn and work with my peers so we can make a change here in New Bedford and hopefully across our country. Don’t discourage yourself and think that this is too big for you, you are not alone in this. If you do not want to start alone, join someone. I am working with others in my community to do the hard work, and I encourage you all to as well. Start with your own city/town if that’s where you’re comfortable but don’t limit yourself there. I’m only saying this in hopes that my truth resignates with someone, because it was a harsh reality I had to face.
