The U.S. is No. 1 in the world for the number of data centers, with thousands more already operational than the country with the second-highest number. And most of the more than 1,500 new data centers planned in the U.S. are set to be built in the South — including two recent proposals at #nashvillezoo and #fiskuniversity.

So @chasitymaynard0 and I created a page where you can get all the latest information — from what these centers are, to the impacts they have and where we have independently confirmed they are located in the #nashville area. taken in Nashville, Tennessee by @liyakira

A data center has been proposed near downtown Nashville on the Fisk University campus. The school says community impact is a “core design consideration” and that the 30 megawatt facility will be beneficial for its students, especially as experts say that data centers have become more of a critical component of daily life.

But Nashville community members say the “city’s future depends on responsible development” — and that they’re not sure what implications the facility would have in making that mission possible. #datacenter #nashville #ai taken in Nashville, Tennessee by @liyakira

Two new data centers are being proposed in Nashville — one just feet away from the #NashvilleZoo and another on Fisk University’s campus. Fisk has described its planned 100,000-square-foot Quantum Leap Innovation and Technology Center as an on-campus infrastructure to help house university electronic data, including #AI.

The two proposed facilities in Nashville would make up more than two dozen across the area, with many more data centers already built or being proposed across the Tennessee.

A company wants to build an #AI data center “just feet away from one of the most fragile and rare collections of animals in the country” at the Nashville Zoo.

Permit records show it would be more than 69,000 square feet and would be one of more than two dozen other data centers in Nashville alone. There are numerous accounts of issues with these centers, including the facilities’ significant need for electricity and water, as well as the impacts they have on the surrounding environment and community power grids.

And now the Zoo and many around Nashville, are pushing back.

“How are we to know this new data center will not lead to irreversible damage to the animals we exist to protect?”
