🦌Think witchcraft, folk horror, female rage and, of course, a fawn.

🦌 It's a slow burn, atmospheric story absolutely perfect for Autumn.

Silent Echo by Elizabeth Scozzari
⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️
Henry's life is broken. His wife is in a psychiatric hospital, and their baby is dead. He needs to fix things, and his best friend, Fiona, is going to help him. Whether she likes it or not.

This was a really excellent read. It's harrowing, traumatic, and very dark so I recommend checking all the triggers. It reads more as a thriller than a horror, but there are definitely aspects that are utterly horrifying.

The writing is very good overall, and very descriptive with dialogue kept to a minimum. Instead we alternate between Henry's and Fiona's POV and what they're thinking, feeling. It's very well done, and I appreciated being in their heads, although that wasn't always a pleasant place to be. Particularly Henry's. There was one particular scene at the start, involving someone being drugged, that I thought was extremely well done, and provided an insight to this sort of experience that, sadly, so many people have been a victim of. My only small gripe with the writing was the overuse of the insult "a**clown". It started to grate on me by the end.

Henry was terrifying. His abuse, and hatred of women was alarming and mostly unexplained. We don't get a true backstory that shows us how he's got here, but in some ways that made it more horrendous. The tragedy didn't create the monster. It was already in him. Instead, it simply gave him a reason to fully unleash it.

The story deals with themes of misogyny, k1dnapping, se3ual violence, domestic violence, forced pregnancy, infantile d3ath, unaliving, mental health. It gets pretty dark, although, thankfully, Scozzari does avoid making some of these scenes too graphic. And I think it is better for it.

Silent Echo released today, 6th October.

Well, it's 1st October and that can mean only one thing...the #indietron month is over 😭.

Thank you so much to the amazing @stephs_creepy_reads for putting on this incredible event. What a success and what an achievement. You should be so proud. Massive thanks, also, to @littleghoulie and @chantellegerxo for being the best hosts and helping run the ship.You all deserve a long sleep and a bottle of wine (or two!). And of course, huge thanks to all the brilliant authors who have been so generous in donating their work. I'm so pleased to have been introduced to some exceptional talent through this event.

Book 16 and, officially, my last book of the #indietron. It Pierces by @therealjackfinn. Folk horror done right.

Bill, Vinny, Eddie and Patrick are ex-marines, meeting up in the Adirondack mountains for their annual hunting getaway. They share a dark past. A past that they would prefer to forget. But a past that the sacred land they are hunting on, will not allow them to ignore.

This was brilliant. It really reminded me of The Ritual by Adam Neville, but so much better. The characters were well developed and gave us plenty about their lives and relationships. I liked the way the story would jump back in time so we could witness what happened during their time as Marines, and how this impacted on the current day. The author also created such a good creeping atmosphere of dread and inevitability. The violence wasn't overdone but was still horrific at times, and I really appreciated the way it touched on war crimes and the inhumanity of battle.

All in all, an excellent example of folk horror done right.

I think this may be my first Western horror and I absolutely loved it.

We follow a pair of bounty hunters, Ada and Pearl, who happen to also be a queer, interracial, married couple. After a wealthy family are slaughtered by a prairie-mad settler, a large bounty is put on his head and Ada and Pearl set off in pursuit, hoping to claim the reward. After witnessing a horrific murder of a fellow bounty-hunter, the trail leads them to the small hamlet of Woodlawn, where they discover the culprit may not even be human.

This was so damn good. The writing was fantastic, the pacing perfect, and the tension building on point. Ada and Pearl were the best FMCs (and we need more from them, please!). I loved their relationship; the way they love each other, and learn from each other. The book touches on themes of racism, colonialism, misogyny, homophobia, and expertly weaves them throughout the main paranormal horror storyline. I also really appreciated the references to real-life incidents such as The Sand Creek Massacre.

Overall, a fantastic story that I would highly recommend. Read. This. Book.

Book 14 in my #indietron month and we have Snake Bight by @robkingfiction. Loved this one.

Greg is a cop suspended from the job after covering up for his bent cop colleague, Jake. To escape the impending investigation and to keep his family in the dark a little longer, he decides a family vacation is what they all need. So he takes his wife and two children away with the promise of Miami, beach time and a lot of fun. Instead, however, they end up in the small town of Snake Bight. A town where everyone is just a little strange, and something is definitely off. A tour of the Everglade's swamp, run by the town's founder and resident mad scientist, leads to a trip they will never forget and one that not all will survive.

This was extremely enjoyable. I loved the story; it was bonkers, involved a lot of alligators, some great tension building and a really excellent ending. The writing was fab and the story flowed really well. It sort of felt a little bit of a game of two halves though, and I think the start of the book and explanation around why Greg was suspended could have been thinned down a little as nothing really comes of it.

Overall, a fun read and an author I will look out for in the future.

I'm afraid this wasn't for me. I really liked the premise - summer camp from hell, cannibalism, dystopian world, kids fighting for their lives etc. But I just could not get on with the writing style. I don't know exactly what it was but I was having to re-read sentences a lot because I wasn't following them. I felt totally confused at times as to what was going on and I found the story became disjointed because of this. This is totally a "me" problem I think, as this book has some brilliant reviews, so please don't be put off by my thoughts.

Book 12 in my #indietron journey and next up, we have Blood Chute by @readashredd. What a story!!

⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️💫
This was a fantastic, sapphic, splatterpunk novel. It had feminine rage, violence, a touch of gory smut (being tied up by entrails is a level of kink I didn't know existed lol) and plenty of bad men getting exactly what they deserved.

I loved Sadie and Cat's story and would totally read a longer novel about them, so we can get more backstory and more squealing piggies!
