1 WEEK LEFT! 🏆 Enter the 2026 NSMA International Painting Competition by next Sunday February 15th for your chance to win the $35,000 Grand Prize, a spot in our three month museum exhibition of finalist works, and $5,000 in additional awards!

Reflections from 2025 Grand Prize winner @lizbrynbeard:

“As I reflect on receiving the Grand Prize in the 2025 NSMA International Painting Competition, I am both honored and immensely grateful. I will never forget the shock and joy that came over me as I saw my name written on the giant $25,000 check being presented to the audience. There are few moments in life that can send you spinning as you sit still, but this was one of them. In that moment, surrounded by fellow painters who are a great inspiration to me, I felt elated. NSMA has created something very special; a competition where painters are choosing the winner, an opportunity to build community, and a yearly showing of beautiful representational paintings. I am excited for its future, and absolutely over the moon to have my painting join the permanent collection at NSMA.”

Uniquely, the finalists themselves determine the recipient of the Grand Prize – a $35,000 Acquisition Award. Each finalist votes for their favorite works (excluding their own) in a new RANKED CHOICE VOTING system we’re thrilled to debut, ensuring the museum acquires a piece that is not only of the highest artistic merit, but also one that is most admired by the very artists who stand among the best of their field.

The finalists’ paintings will be showcased in an exhibition at NSMA this May through August, our museum’s busiest season of the year, providing a platform for recognition and appreciation. The Awards Gala, held in early May, is a catered event where finalists have the opportunity to hang out with other like-minded high level artists.

We hope you’ll consider sharing your art with us and participating in this year’s competition!

DEADLINE: SUNDAY FEBRUARY 15TH 11:59PM EST

All painting mediums, styles, and subject matter welcome - Portrait, Figure, Landscape, Narrative, Still Life, etc.

🏆 A tremendous congratulations again to @lizbrynbeard for winning the NSMA 2025 Competition Grand Prize - a $25,000 Acquisition Award for her painting “Mother and Son” to join NSMA’s permanent collection! 🏆

What makes this award so unique is its method of selection – rather than a single juror or panel selecting the winner, the finalists themselves determined the recipient of the Acquisition Award at the awards ceremony on Saturday May 3rd, 2025. Each finalist had the opportunity to cast a vote for their favorite work in the exhibition – excluding their own – ensuring that the museum acquires a piece that is not only of the highest artistic merit, but also one that is most admired by the very artists who stand among the best of their field.

Elizabeth Beard is originally from Youngstown, Ohio, and currently resides in New York City. She came to painting while studying at Miami University of Ohio, decided to pursue further education, and eventually graduated from the Grand Central Academy (GCA). In addition to her training at GCA, studying with Boston School Impressionist Paul Ingbretson had a major influence on her style. She is captivated by the painters of the Boston School, along with the work of Degas, Ingres, Inness, and Velázquez.

In recent years, Liz has become a mother and puts most of her energy into spending time with her toddler Samuel. This experience has resulted in inspiration and creativity in unexpected ways. Liz is dedicated to cultivating her passion for painting in the midst of motherhood and describes her limited time spent in the studio as “wild ambition, every minute treasured.” Mother and Son is her first figure painting executed in a fully impressionistic method. Working from daubs of color/value, she gradually draws out the visual impression in a process best described as “coming out of the fog.” This is a turning point in Liz’s career – she is excited about the aesthetic results and eager to explore the subjects of motherhood, fatherhood, innocence, maturation, and the visual embodiment of family. by @lizbrynbeard

Tonight was a very special night!! I was blown off my chair when my painting Mother and Son was chosen for the @newsalemmuseum acquisition award.

Reflecting on these past couple years where baby Samuel has grown and painting two days a week has been the very best I could do- I’m tempted to feel split and unsatisfied. But the reality is that It is a blessing to be home with my son and a blessing to be at the easel.

In the midst of my celebration, I want to encourage all the women (and men) who are juggling two loves. Little by little can add up to a lot and nothing can replace the time spent with your baby! Thank you to every artist who voted for my painting- this is such an incredible affirmation. by @lizbrynbeard
