Like many of the most rewarding journeys, this has been a long one, please bear with my chronology. 🌀

In 2024, I was first introduced to @batcherblockoperahousestaples in Staples, Minnesota, by my friend @taylorhallobrien when we documented the space with @penelopepaloma for Cabana Magazine No. 22.

To celebrate its publication, we returned with guests willing to make the Sunday trek for an evening of opera and history, joining the local community around long candlelit tables for the kind of meat-and-potatoes dinner that would make a grandmother proud.

Under original frescoes of cherubs and floral cartouches, @charleseatonbaritone accompanied by @josephlipianist performed Korngold’s “Mein Sehnen, mein Wähnen” translated, “My Longing, My Dreaming”, from Die tote Stadt.

With the support of @knordstrum @liquidmusicseries @mnopera @maisonbodega @taylorhallobrien and an extraordinary group of artists and collaborators, we experienced the Opera House as Charles Batcher had envisioned it: full of life.

@_soyr @overbite.studio and crew made a film of the evening, “They Don’t See Ghosts”, clips of which you can see in this post. Earlier this year, many of us gathered again, this time at @maisonbodega to screen the short film while Colleen Frost and @toby_rapson spoke about the building.

Today, in @cabanamagazine we’re able to read about the preservation of the Opera House not simply as an architectural project or an act of rural placemaking, but as a form of caretaking.

We said goodbye to the Queen of our Hearts, Agnes Pfeffernüsse this week. 🐾.
-
Over our 12 years together she was a renovation manager, head of Sally’s finishing school, a companion in all computer deadlines (though she preferred attentions be on the garden or her many perches and tuffets), a dinner party host, garden supervisor, inspector of all bags that entered the house.
-
And though her diagnosis was sudden, her last days were filled with as much fairytale as her life: visits to her favorite Barbette, slumber parties in the garden, a final royal procession through Loring Park. A menagerie of birds and butterflies, bumblebees and neighborhood cats stopped to pay their respects to her in her favorite lounge chair.

She was so good at living, the center of our world, love of my life, a constant companion in everything we’ve endeavored to build. Agnes, you’re one in a million, the most beautiful girl, we love you so much. 🤍 taken in Maison Bodega by @lizgrdnr

Both a home and a creative studio, this 1920s Minneapolis mansion was carefully restored and reimagined by @lizgrdnr of @maisonbodega. The goal was to create a space that was practical for modern life, but without losing the layers of history. Rather than removing traces of past color, Liz used them to inform the textiles and colors she introduced, finding a rosy pink in the plaster of the lower-level bathroom, seafoam milk paint beneath the drop ceilings, celery yellow around the concrete stair hanger, and tawny brown in the ballroom.
