We will not be silent…

Because somewhere, right now, there’s a young woman who feels special — and she has no idea yet that she’s prey.

We are done being quiet so other people can stay comfortable. Our silence protected them for a hundred years. Our voices are going to bury them. by @lizsteinonline

Elizabeth “Liz” Stein — Survivor. Human Trafficking Specialist. Survivor Advocate. World Without Exploitation STAND Fellow.

I survived. I show up. In 1994, as a college senior, I encountered Jeffrey Epstein and Ghislaine Maxwell in New York. For more than 25 years I carried that truth until I publicly named myself on the day of the Maxwell verdict in 2021.

In 2025 I stood with other survivors to demand the Epstein Files Transparency Act and the full, timely release of records needed to expose the truth. Delayed, partial, or duplicative disclosures sabotage justice and retraumatize survivors — and I refuse to let that stand.

My work centers on survivor-led accountability: full transparency, criminal prosecution of co‑conspirators, and systemic reform. As a STAND Fellow and anti‑trafficking expert, I press for policies that prioritize survivors, and I speak and write to make truth the foundation of justice.

On Gandhi’s birth anniversary, we gathered at Asia Society to honour people who stand with the Last Girl.
Apne Aap is informed by two Gandhian principles. Ahimsa means nonviolence: challenging the violence of buying and selling another human being. Antyodaya means the uplift of the person who comes last. In the communities where we work, that person is often a girl.
At Apne Aap, we begin with her. Our ten assets (a safe place, an education, an identity, a livelihood and friends who stand beside her) help her gain control over her own life.
We also remembered our dear friend Gloria Steinem. For nearly two decades she chaired Apne Aap’s advisory board. She came to India, sat with women and girls in our communities and listened to them.
Thank you to our 2026 honorees: Rachel Foster, Lauren Hersh, Rebecca Zipkin, Liz Stein, Dr. Vandana Shiva and Janet Jensen. Thank you also to Asia Society and to everyone who joined us on October 2.
Choose one commitment, and give it a next step and a date. Help a girl stay in school. Support a survivor’s access to justice. Open a path to a livelihood.
The Last Girl is where we begin.

What makes the Epstein case important is not that the circumstances were unusual, but that they illuminate a problem that exists far beyond this case. Survivors of trafficking routinely encounter systems that are fragmented, difficult to navigate and, at times, more concerned with process than with the people those systems are supposed to serve. The failures may look different from case to case, but the consequence is often the same: survivors are left to navigate the aftermath while law enforcement agencies, prosecutors, courts, social-service systems and other institutions move on.

The question, then, is not simply what happened to survivors, but what happened around them. Who had information? Who had the authority to act? What was overlooked, dismissed or never pursued? And are the institutions responsible willing to examine their own role in what survivors experienced?

The partial release of the Epstein files by the DOJ included the names and identifying information of survivors who had a reasonable expectation of privacy. At the same time, redactions protected powerful individuals whose roles in the case warranted scrutiny. For survivors of sexual violence and trafficking, the message is deeply consequential.

Privacy is not a courtesy extended to survivors. It is an obligation. And when the government fails to protect it, it undermines the very trust on which the pursuit of justice depends. by @lizsteinonline

Yesterday, our Executive Director, Dr. Kristen Ali Eglinton, joined profoundly courageous Epstein and GBV survivors, artists, activists, and advocates in Union Square for 60 Million Survivors Rising: NYC - a moving gathering of survivor power and solidarity, calling for justice, accountability, healing and an end to the systems and cultures that enable sexual and gender-based violence. Being there listening, singing, rising, and standing alongside survivors meant more than we can possibly capture in words. We were especially moved to be there with Epstein survivors & extraordinary advocates Jess Michaels and Liz Stein - survivors and thrivers whose courage, truth-telling and continued fight for justice remind us of what becomes possible when survivors are heard, believed, supported & able to stand together. Yesterday we shared with Jess and Liz our work with survivors globally - we are truly a family. And we were so moved to see one of our favorite artists, MILCK, standing with survivors & singing “Quiet” - a song that’s meant so much to movements against GBV around the world & to us personally.

We were also joined by our dear friend Michelle from NYC Pride, who came to stand & rise alongside us & give as she always does from her heart 🥹.
For nearly two decades, Footage has worked alongside women & girls in all their diversity, LGBTQIA+, gender expansive folks & communities affected by GBV, forced displacement and intersecting forms of violence and exclusion around the world. Yesterday, we were there supporting survivors, as we do across our work globally, while also continuing to meet and build relationships w/organizations & communities for FemSMS NYC, our newest intervention sharing trusted, compassionate information with immigrant, refugee & exiled LGBTQIA+ New Yorkers, including around safety and gender-based violence. Yesterday was unforgettable. We won’t give up! Thank you for never giving up to these souls: @jessmichaelsspeaks @lizsteinonline @vdayorg @feminist @aapolicyforum @milckmusic @eveensler @katiephang @one_billion_rising @susanceliaswan @epsteinsurvivorsisters @tainaasili @resistancerevivalchorus @meechelleb @kaeglinton many many more ❤️‍🩹 taken in Union Square, NYC by @lizsteinonline

For too long, sexual violence has been treated as something survivors were expected to carry quietly. But we are changing that.

We are speaking openly about what happened to us, demanding accountability from the people and institutions that failed us, and making clear that our experiences will not be dismissed, buried, or forgotten.

As survivors of Jeffrey Epstein, we are not fighting only for ourselves.
We are fighting for the survivor who has never been able to anyone what happened to them. For the survivor who was not believed. For the survivor who was told to stay quiet because the person who harmed them was too powerful, too wealthy, too connected or too important to hold accountable.

We are fighting for the millions of survivors across this country who know exactly what it means when systems fail to protect them.
Because when survivors step forward, something changes. Not all at once. Not easily. But our voices can give other survivors permission to speak their truth.

When survivors rise together, we make visible what too many people would rather keep hidden. We challenge the systems that protect perpetrators and silence survivors. And we remind one another that we are not alone. by @lizsteinonline
