POSTS STORIES REELS TAGGED
Grateful, overwhelmed, excited, delighted and all the emotions for/by the response to NANNY ahead of Thursday’s BBC Radio 4 broadcast

The last few years have been a lot — births, deaths and everything in between — and this little play has been there through it all

Please tune in this Thursday at 2.15pm on @bbcradio4, and share with anyone who might enjoy it (looking at you parents and comedy/musical theatre fans 👀).

Pick of the Week in The Observer, Sunday Times, Radio Times, Mail on Sunday, The i Weekend and The Times… and I’ve still failed to make my children proud:

“I’m not proud of you. Why would I be proud? It’s not exciting for me” — Wilf
(he’s literally in it too, it should be exciting for him for that reason if nothing else)

Directed by Sara Pascoe, produced by Perfectly Normal and Folio for BBC Radio 4. by @lizzie_stables

Nanny is a play with songs about female friendship, ambition and the realities of modern caregiving.

Set over six weeks at a stay-and-play toddler group, it follows actor-nannies Amy and Leanne as they juggle demanding employers, financial instability and dwindling creative opportunities, while attempting to build a comedy double act.

Episodic in structure, the piece explores the tension between nurturing other people’s children and sustaining your own ambitions, asking what it means to “grow up” when life hasn’t unfolded as expected. As pressures mount — from work, relationships and the question of motherhood — their partnership is tested.

The radio version of the debut play for stage, written by actors Alana Ramsey and Lizzie Stables, with Jenny Rainsford.

With original songs by Matthew Floyd Jones, co-creator of West End musical Kathy & Stella Solve a Murder! and one half of Frisky & Mannish.

Directed by comedian and writer Sara Pascoe and produced by David Morley for Perfectly Normal productions, Nanny is funny, sharp and deeply relatable - a love letter to big dreams, messy friendships, and the invisible work that keeps everything going.

Matthew Floyd Jones plays Kim

This sensational, so kind person would have been 70 today. We miss him so much and feel his loss every day. He was the most amazing Dad, truly, and I wish so hard he could be here to be the Grandparent he so loved to be. It’s not the same without him, but I’m so grateful I’m his daughter and thankful to have known and loved him. I wish we could celebrate with a big party including a set from the band - or even just a dinner in the dining room and one or AT MOST TWO drinks on the sunny bench at the front. We don’t imagine we won’t make it to 70, I don’t think. We don’t imagine bringing up our children without our parents there to love and support us and to love them too. There’s a Dad shape hole in my heart (NOT LITERALLY 🙄) today and always, but here’s to Andy Stables - 70 years ago the Earth became a kinder and more positive place for a bit with you on it and we will try our best to keep it up and make you proud. You’re not reading this of course but I LOVE YOU DAD ❤️ by @lizzie_stables

2025 has been difficult for our family, but great things happened too. In no particular order (but very much best achievement first) Wilf was an exceptional, if neglectful, Joseph in the school nativity - holding the fort when Mary didn’t show up. Only slightly less impressively, brother Dan wrote his first book Fiesta which the Times called “affecting and articulate” and I call absolutely bloody amazing. We went on lots of nice holidays, mainly in the UK coz I hate flying and I’m fine with that 🤣. We recorded the songs from Nanny and got commissioned by BBC R4. I did lots of fun voiceover projects (thanks @yaketyyakvoices). I watched Wilf watch Matt in Joey and have never seen someone so proud and in awe - until of course when some months later I watched Wilf don his beard and tabard (thanks @llaurendrummond) and get into character…2026 will doubtless be a challenge but so much to look forward to as well and so grateful for my incredible family ❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️ by @lizzie_stables

We’re proud to develop new writing with and by artists in the Southwest, with a commitment that continues beyond the first production, giving plays new life in radio/screen.

To celebrate our 10th anniversary season, we’re looking back at some of our favourite Folio shows from the last decade!

1) Our first show, Unearthed by @alysmetcalf - directed by @kimlpearce - toured across London and the Southwest, and was named one of the Guardian’s shows of the year.

2) Our second show, Reel Life by @alysmetcalf, was developed in association with partner charity @coppafeel and played at @theatreroyalbath1805 @theoldtownhall.trowbridge and St James Theatre (London), directed by @adamlenson

3) In 2018, we commissioned The Edit, the debut play by award-winning writer Sarah Gordon, which toured throughout the Southwest, directed by @huftonjoe

4) 2019 saw us tour Believe by Russ Tunney @1piratesmall around community centres and village halls in partnership with Pound Arts and Rural Arts Wiltshire, directed by @lizzie_stables

5) In response to Covid-19, we made our first foray into film in 2020, producing World Wide Wiltshire by @hannah.treadaway and David Ellington, celebrating our Wiltshire home, in co-production with Wiltshire Creative, directed by @jonewmandirector

6) In 2021 in association with English Touring Theatre and Pound Arts, we went further with digital production and developed a film adaptation of @alysmetcalf play Reel Life, our second theatre show.

7) In 2023, we produced our first musical Nanny, which played at Bristol Old Vic Weston Studio, directed by @jenny.rainsford. The BBC Radio 4 adaptation of Nanny, directed by @sara.pascoe will form part of our 10th anniversary season!
