At one of the talks I did recently someone asked if I’d ever thought of creating stitched versions of my linocut prints. I’ve often used the patterns within them as inspiration but not the full image. So here I am with a little trial version.

I gave another talk yesterday at Kingsfold Library where I worked for 8 years before retiring in 2024. This time I showed my portfolios which include work from as early as 1979, when I was on my degree course in Kingston upon Hull, together with examples of my more recent printmaking efforts, collage work and current drawing projects.
The main focus was on my embroidery pieces and again I referenced the book ‘Slow Stitch’ by @cwellesleysmith which I happened to come across one day while working in the library. This book together with @k.j.turner work and her brilliant templates were what spring-boarded me into the work I’m producing today. I’m happy to spread the word about the benefits of slow stitch and the type of freestyle embroidery I’m doing. It’s a quiet and meditative practice but also a great way to show creative expression which I think should be taken just as seriously as other art forms. by @lizziedee28

31 days of my May sampler now complete.
My ‘A nature poem for every day’ book is the gift that keeps on giving - I really thought I’d be running out of ideas by now, but it continues to surprise me!
I never imagined I’d be catching a little fish with a berry on a thread - but I managed it in stitch!

April sampler.
25cm diameter.
Fine cotton thread on washed linen.
Inspired by daily nature poems.

The bearded gentleman may appear to be incongruous among the flowers and tiny birds but he is from the Edward Lear limerick - although I couldn’t quite fit the ‘two owls and a hen, four larks and a wren’ in there, so you’ll just have to imagine them!
I’m still loving how these grow - just one small section a day and a finished piece to be proud of. by @lizziedee28

Yesterday I gave my first talk to a very interested and appreciative group of artists at #prestonartsociety
I spoke about my creative journey, which has had its ups and downs while navigating work and family responsibilities, my step back into printmaking a few years ago and what ultimately led me to investigate stitching as a creative medium.
I made reference to the book Slow Stitch by @cwellesleysmith which initially sparked my interest but special mention was given to @k.j.turner whose daily stitching and stitch journals have been a huge inspiration to me and it’s Karen’s templates I’ve used as a base in many of my pieces.
Thank you Karen for continuing to support and champion all your fellow stitchers on IG.
13 people joined in to start one of the practice pieces I’d designed. I hope some of them might make contact with Karen and start on their own stitch journey.
In all the excitement I forgot to get photos from the actual presentation so here I’m showing some demo pieces and the kits I prepared, plus a rare photo of me all dressed up for the event. by @lizziedee28

I hope my March sampler will spread a little happiness this morning. The poems for March called for people and some different animals to be included. The lady with the floral coronet could (almost) be me on my wedding day many, many years ago when I had wavy hair and refused to wear a veil.
‘Soft-foot winter-thief’ is a line from a poem by William Morris - I liked the idea of spring quietly approaching, almost unseen and unheard, until one day the sun is shining and you notice all the new shoots in the garden and hear the birds singing. It really feels like Spring - and then the next day it’s out with the woolly hat and raincoat again - good old interesting British weather! by @lizziedee28

One of my embroidery pieces - ‘A Celebration of the Harris’ will be on show #harrisopen 2026 which runs from 21 February until 3 May @harris_museum
This is the first time I’ve exhibited my embroidery work and it will be great to see it alongside all the other wonderful work submitted by the people of Preston. by @lizziedee28

January finished and time for a critique of my own work.
Once I’d chosen the threads and transferred my design onto the linen the only real plan was to use the daily poems to inspire each tiny element. I had no real idea how the finished item would look - I knew I wanted to add lines from the poems so there had to be larger areas in order to accommodate that. I somehow imagined it might have a more ethereal quality but that didn’t happen and I wish now that I’d used darker shades for the borders between the designs. I know these will evolve each month just as last year’s journals did so it’s still a learning process, which is good and my ‘drawing’ skills are definitely improving. I think from now on I will refer to these as ‘samplers’ - just because that seems more relevant to me.

An update on my January piece.
My original plan for using a vintage napkin for this was abandoned as I didn’t like the harsh white background - I much prefer a natural linen colour.
I’m an avid reader but not a poetry expert so I bought a book - ‘A Nature poem for every day of the year’ - when I was in Hay-on-Wye last year, and I’d been saving it to start reading in January. Each tiny image here is inspired by the daily poems - I hope to carry this on for each month of the year and I think some lines from the poems add another dimension.
I’ve used a selection of threads from #dmc @paintboxthreads #caronthreads and some beautiful new extra fine threads from @k.j.turner - I’m finding that finer threads are definitely becoming my preference as it makes it so much easier to ‘draw’ with them and create the images that are in my head.

One of my favourite parts of all this stitching is deciding on a colour palette and then selecting the threads I’ll use. Then there’s the anticipation of what it might become. The inspiration for January has been staring me in the face for a good few days, but before I let you know what it is I’ll start the stitching and see what happens.
