Grateful.

Grateful to be healthy enough to compete. Grateful to feel that kind of intensity, pressure, and adversity because those moments remind you that you're alive and that growth happens outside your comfort zone.

A big oss to the other competitors in my bracket who put themselves out there. Massive respect.

Most of all, I'm grateful for my coaches @gryphonjiujitsu and @_carsonbussieres, all my training partners, and this incredible community @courtenay_bjj .

The friendships built through jiu-jitsu are something special.

The medal is nice, but the people and the journey mean so much more.

With a beautifully forged and sculpted blade in 1084 carbon steel from Dr. Zech @anvilandyew this one really pops. The handle has a double brass bolster backed by ancient bog oak from @bog_oak_shop_morta_wood, stunning stabilized red cedar burl from @ljp250 and a beautiful centrepiece of stabilized Bavarian woolly mammoth tooth given to me by Flo @oldowlknives. Red vulcanized fibre spacers and a brass lanyard tube tie it all together. by @ljp250

What an incredible journey.

For the past two years, I’ve been on a path of self-improvement and reflection. At my heaviest, I was 317 lbs. I set a simple goal: get down to 285. If I could do that, I would walk into a jiu-jitsu gym. Nothing more.

About 18 months later, this past Saturday, I stepped onto the mat for my first tournament and was fortunate to earn a gold medal. I weighed in at 258, fully clothed and in shoes—but the number mattered far less than what it represented. What stays with me most isn’t the medal, but the journey it took to get there.

I’ve decided to make 2026 a year of slowing down—of being present and learning to truly appreciate moments as they happen. I’ve also begun bringing God more intentionally into my life. For much of my life, I’ve moved quickly from one goal to the next without pausing to reflect. This moment felt different. It humbled me in a way I didn’t expect.

The experience itself was emotional and deeply grounding—something that’s hard to fully understand unless you step onto the mat yourself. I felt an overwhelming sense of gratitude for everyone who supported me, trained with me, pushed me, and believed in me, especially on the days I doubted myself.

Thank you to my BJJ community at Courtenay BJJ and Goblins Jiu-Jitsu, and to all my coaches and training partners at both gyms. I’m especially grateful in this moment to Coach @gryphonjiujitsu @courtenay_bjj for encouraging me to compete and helping me build a clear, thoughtful plan, which i tried my best to execut and to @danoftheapes for coaching and cornering me at the tournament.

I didn’t walk this path alone. I’m deeply thankful for that.

Right now, I’m simply grateful, humbled, and fully present in this moment by @ljp250
