One month ago, I had a truly life-affirming experience. Anyone who knows my music taste knows that "adore" doesn't even begin to encapsulate my relationship with #jazz & #thegreatamericansongbook. So it was fitting that 8 years and 3 months after I had to miss her previous concert here due to academic commitments, I was finally able to catch my #firstlove in jazz Diana Krall in concert!! For close to 15 years, her voice and piano have formed a core part of the soundtrack to the highs, in-betweens and lows of my life. To witness her sing & swing many of those tunes (along with a few songs that she hasn't released) was ecstatic and breathtaking. I am still struggling to find the words to relate my experience of the evening except that I would be most glad to relive it again annually. Truly grateful to the staff of the @esplanadesingapore for working tirelessly to bring great art here at affordable costs. #yearmade #earlybirthdaygift #christmascameearly #whatsnext by @llaljazz
You brought trouble Taught me to handle it Thanks for the lesson... You brought worry Taught me to laugh at it Now I'm confessin' That my whole approach is new After a year like you So we'll share a toast From the loving cup Here's to you grown old And to me grown up There's nothing left up your sleeve But I'm sorry to see you leave Arnold Miller and Connie Pearce, "Sorry to See You Go" I will never forget you 2023. Your highs were Everest, your lows were Tartarus. But I'm all the more stronger for it. Special thanks to the friends and musicians who nourished me through these past twelve months. 2024, you're on! by @llaljazz
A true #mondaymemory today. On this day, Wednesday, September 11th 2013, I witnessed the epitomé of legend, talent & dignity with Tony Bennett in concert in my hometown. Tony was there with me at the beginning of my CD-collecting days in 2011. I remember being shocked that the daring pop star @ladygaga was collaborating with him & I bought the album Duets II out of curiosity. Little did I know that my curiosity would open up a whole new world of Songbook standards to me, from the heartache of Blue Velvet with @kdlang to the joy of Watch What Happens with @nataliecoleofficial & the determination of Who Can I Turn To with @queenlatifah. And, of course, The Lady Is A Tramp remains one of my all-time favourite songs to this day - such a spirited number! In addition to being a companion through my ups & downs and so many different phases of growth these past dozen years, Tony gave me a sense of community. From listening to his CDs with my maternal granddad to commiserating over his talent with my bestie @theemirstrikesback &, not forgetting reading the outpouring of sentiment at his recent passing all over social media, Tony gave me a way to make positive meaningful connections with others. A big deal for a kid who was bullied all through public school! So here's to you Uncle Tony! Thank you for being uncompromising with your craft & generous with your spirit. You have made a lifelong Songbook fan out of me & have made me feel safe across rough & gentle times. The way you belted out Kander & Ebb's coda on Maybe This Time that night in concert will always stay with me as a call to get back up after being pummeled down. You can rest easy @itstonybennett . With folks at the mic like @dianakrall, @staceykentofficial, @veronicaswiftofficial, @cyrilleaimee, @cecilemclorinsalvant, @tierneysutton_music, @laura__anglade & especially @alemayzing where I live, the songs which you championed continue to be interpreted with originality & feeling today 😊 We'll keep the music playing #champion #riptonybennett #jazzinjuly #mydurian #gershwin #jazzismyreligion #greatamericansongbook by @llaljazz
This April & May have been bittersweet for me. After a year of engaging research & brainbreaking labour, I birthed a 10 511-word long essay on an aspect of Shakespeare's History plays. Also, I moved out of the very first place in which I lived by myself for the better part of half a decade. As @tashasturgess would attest to, many moments of delight & despair were witnessed by its walls. 2018 me would have never believed that he would be able to make a home away from relatives & enjoy the ride. As I let my undergraduate years pass into history, I thank them for teaching me to be confident. Staring ahead at 2 years of graduate school, I hope to remember the precious skills & experiences which you have endowed me with - I can dig my own oasis in this desert called adulthood To the friends, teachers, mentors & acquaintances whom I have encountered, most especially @prtpnshd, @dariennesim, @iphis.23, @the_batzilla, @kankshac & @sarahalexkangweilin , thank you for the laughs & the lessons! Uni would have been quite monochromal sans vous To the wordsmiths @faithngsm & @amandaleekoe, I feel grateful to have chanced upon your plays & short stories all those years ago. Had it not been for your care in crafting characters & situations, I honestly don't know how I would have been able to find a way back into fiction again. I feel a tinge of regret for not showering your works with the critical attention with which I have devoted to Willie S. I hope that my frequent recommendations of your writings to anyone interested in picking up contemporary reads would make up for the oversight To the special individuals Ms @oniattaeffendi & @johnchowkeanu who met me in SP, your encouragement & kindness to me from way back in the day was invaluable in bringing me here. I hope life continues to be enriching journeys for you both To @theemirstrikesback, @arunnawin & @tashasturgess, your unwavering belief in me despite having seen all my colours is a true 🎁. I am indebted to your presence in my life Ps @halo_saysaditi you're an awesome photographer! Thanks for snapping me on that Friday by @llaljazz
I'll never forget the dread with which I marked my 15th birthday. There was too much strife & too little clarity over a way forward. I was planning to end it all. But music stepped in. The glorious soulful refrains of such stars as @firstladyofsong , @sinatra, @itstonybennett, @dianakrall & @staceykentofficial intervened to keep me going... A decade later, & with the close of my journey as an English Literature undergraduate upon me, a cloud of uncertainty looms over me again. But this time, with such folks as @tashasturgess, @arunnawin, @theemirstrikesback, @johnchowkeanu , @kankshac , @the_batzilla , @sarahalexkangweilin @ari.elle.e , @kloudyclown @meowmeowproject , @nyalimusic , @alemayzing, @rosie.mcgowan & @elaine.mwm cheering me on, I feel strangely braver turning 25 today. Here are the highlights of my 2022. The year's moral: When we truly listen to each other, communication becomes a life-saving art. To my friends & allies, thank you for lending me your ears this year - the best 🎁 I could ask for A BIG thank you to everyone who came out last night & spent my #birtheve with me! @ashsekaran , @singletsushi , @freyr.music it was a thrill to get to know each of you. Here's to more conversations moving forward! #recharged #grateful by @llaljazz
What?! Is the year over? Imma get ready for the next one now. Before this rollercoaster ride is through (because it was surreal to cast my ballot for the first time), I'd like to remember some of the folks that have made the boring times more colourful, the cruel moments less excruciating & the fun hours last longer. Here's to a better 2021 for everyone! #countingmyblessings #onemustimaginesisyphushappy #fighton by @llaljazz
So my winter holidays are coming to a close. I would like to thank Fr Time for giving me the opportunity to listen, read, watch and eat for pleasure along with the chance to reconnect with the people who matter. A #shoutout to @tashasturgess and @the_batzilla for forking out the time to spend with me too! If only we kept time for pictures... by @llaljazz
It's #throwbackthursday and time for good memories. Back to March 2018 then when I had more hair, my play #Together was staged for the 2nd time and I looked so stiff next to tomorrow's birthday girl Natasha Sophia Sturgess! I cherish what a crazy dope she can be (much like #harleyquinn ) and how she has lightened up my life (albeit virtually most of the time) in too many ways to count. For being such a joy and comfort in my life, @tashasturgess , may your next decade bring ye success & fulfilment in all you chase along with lots of love from folks around you! Ps don't forget me when you're snuggled up in #brexitland by @llaljazz
If you find someone who can make you laugh, challenge you to grow and sees you for who you are and loves you anyway, smile contentedly: You have found yourself one of life's greatest treasures #grateful #siblingbonding #bestforlast #7yearsandcounting by @llaljazz
https://www.hairforhope.org.sg/shavee/luke-ow-5240 So it's done. My new (and favourite) look in #solidarity with all the children with cancer. Please donate to the above link with whatever you're comfortable with. Your donations will go long way with helping the children pay for their medication, tuition fees and other support services in the midst of their battle against the cancer. So this past weekend, #jazzinjuly brought in an American singer named @tierney_sutton and her trio. Had listened to some of her songs over the years and was excited to watch her. But nothing could've prepared me for her amazing manipulation of rhythm and dynamics along with getting to watch her at a masterclass I walked in to. The state of jazz is truly #aliveandwell and she's got a new fan. @lucymerrilyn , @theemirstrikesback , @the_batzilla , @manderwaalsforces , @_haiks , @ranisingam , @rafik_barseghian you guys be be interested to check her music out. by @llaljazz
"My name is Ozymandias, King of Kings; Look on my Works, ye Mighty, and despair!" These words by #percyshelley definitely encapsulate these poses by these #romanemperors . In the first pic is Emperor Galba who reigned from June 68 AD to January 69 AD. Contrary to his triumphant posture, he was assassinated by his own bodyguards and his head was turned into a public spectacle. In the second picture is Emperor Domitian who reigned from 81-96 AD and, despite his statue's smirk, was stabbed by his attendants (though he did get a premonition that he would die at noon which transpired). Ironies like this contain lessons for us all. #returntoitaly #historybuff #throwbackthursday #meditations #vaticanmuseums by @llaljazz
