Shoe in Bikini, 1970

Fashion historians often cite Shoe in Bikini as an example of the growing boldness of fashion photography in the early 1970s. Through the fragmentation of the body, striking minimalism and a tightly cropped composition, Bailey transforms the image into an almost abstract study of line, contrast and form, with the shoe becoming its central visual element.

The photograph is also frequently cited as an inspiration for the Jimmy Choo Spring/Summer 2009 campaign photographed by Terry Richardson, where Bailey’s composition was consciously reinterpreted.

One detail can open an entire world of references.

It started with Sleuth (2007), and the furniture of Ron Arad.

Steel bent into unexpected forms. Curves that feel almost bodily. Objects suspended somewhere between furniture and sculpture, function and character.

What interests me most is the moment when a functional object moves beyond its purpose and becomes a visual statement in its own right.
