Revisiting how it all started…

Lloyd Adams — Who hailed from St. Thomas, USVI moved stateside, and settled in Harlem, New York with his family at the age of nine. Initially, basketball was his first love, and he was pretty good at it too! He made All-City during his time at Hughes High School, and got a scholarship to play at the University of Wisconsin, and then the University of Rhode Island. He even made it to training camp for the Baltimore Bullets, but suffered an injury that would steer him in a different direction.

Lloyd initially worked as a drug counselor in Harlem, and still played ball on the weekends, but would bake carrot cakes for his friends, from a recipe he received from his mom. Every time there was a Knicks game, his friends would come over and he’d bake a cake (he was the only one with cable at that time). His friends said, ‘Lloyd you got something here!’ Their encouragement coupled with the need for a delicious carrot cake in the city motivated him to start LLOYD’S CARROT CAKE!

His mission and motto? “You just have to get them to taste it. Once they taste it we’re in”

The rest is history.

Thank you to our followers old and new for rocking with us on this journey.

A belated and big thank you to @tmagazine @nytimes and @luke.fortney for the feature. We are truly humbled and grateful.

We don’t get this far without the love and commitment from our dedicated team and our beloved Lloyd’s community.

We hope Lloyd and Betty are smiling from up above. We still stand because of their love… For each other, for the history of this recipe, this business, this community.

This team reflects the grit and grind of NYC and all the small businesses that have been hustling along the way. Some for five years, some for 45 years. But what still rings true is, sometimes you gotta dig your way out to come out on top. It’s how you approach the adversity.. It’s how you build on the small wins along the journey.

When opening Lloyd’s Carrot Cake became an idea for Lloyd… he was just baking cakes for his friends when they came over to watch the Knicks games.

40 years later, we’re still baking… and still grinding. So these wins are for him and Betty, and all the small businesses that put in the work everyday — And that’s always a New York state of mind.

Let’s go New York!!!

🍰 One of our sweetest treasures: Lloyd’s Carrot Cake.

Moist, perfectly spiced, and irresistibly rich—this classic has earned its spot as a favorite at Café Massawa. Every bite is soft, flavorful, and just the right amount of indulgent.

If you know, you know… and if you don’t, it’s time to find out. 🥕✨ by @lloydscarrotcake
