Can Architecture Preserve A Lost Memory?

Some buildings protect objects.

This one protects a vanished world.

The Lost Shtetl Jewish Museum stands where an entire community once lived before it disappeared in 1941. Rather than recreating the village literally, the architects imagined it through a cluster of abstract house-like forms—a quiet reminder of homes, streets, and lives that can no longer be rebuilt.

The architecture speaks through restraint.

Natural light enters gently through ridge skylights, while aluminum façades shift with the changing sky, sometimes bright, sometimes almost invisible. The building never dominates the landscape. Instead, it becomes part of it, allowing memory to remain the focus.

Surrounding the museum, a memorial park retraces the final journey taken by the people of Šeduva, transforming the act of walking into an act of remembrance.

Some architecture is designed to impress.

The most meaningful architecture is designed so we never forget.

Construction work on the educational building for the Tikkurila Competence Campus, designed by Lahdelma & Mahlamäki architects, is set to begin in Vantaa, Finland.

The building wraps around an entire block, but thanks to the diverse facade materials and the varying rhythm of the building mass, it has a light and multifaceted appearance.

Volumetric cluster — photo courtesy @kuviophoto + @aiste.rakauskaite + Andrew Lee / architect: @lmarchitects_fi / project: The Lost Shtetl Museum stands in Šeduva as a quiet yet powerful memorial to vanished Jewish communities of Eastern Europe.

Composed of a cluster of white gabled volumes, the building evokes the image of a traditional shtetl—reinterpreted through a contemporary architectural language. Rather than reconstructing history literally, the project abstracts memory into form, creating a spatial narrative rooted in absence, loss, and remembrance.

The restrained material palette and sculptural roofscape allow the museum to merge gently with the surrounding landscape, while the sequence of spaces guides visitors through an emotional journey between light and shadow, openness and enclosure.

Through its subtle geometry and symbolic composition, the museum transforms architecture into a vessel of collective memory—where history is not only displayed, but deeply experienced.

Facades of the Lost Shtetl Museum are made of marine aluminium sheets, reminiscent of wooden shingles, arranged to form a scale-like surface that lives and reflects light according to the cycle of the day and the seasons. The material also recalls the weathered rural buildings typical of the Lithuanian countryside. The directions of the roof ridges and their varying steepness create a deliberate, sculptural randomness.

The concept behind The Lost Shtetl Jewish Museum is based on a destroyed village of Šeduva and its culture, which vanished overnight in August 1941. 664 Jews from the village were executed in the nearby forests. Along with human lives, Šeduva’s long and rich history was also lost. The museum was built to commemorate the lost lives and culture, which represented not only Jewish but also European culture.
