@lo_aleen is joining us again next month for another Armenian Needlelace workshop! Join Lo for an exploration of Armenian craft and culture as we transform a simple needle and thread into beautiful lace! During the workshop, you’ll learn the basic techniques of needlelace and spend some time playing with the form. You’ll have time to complete 2-3 small (~5cm) pieces, either from a pre-set pattern or from your own imagination, while also learning more about Armenian history and symbols that can be looped and knotted into the lace. This workshop is open to all, regardless of cultural background or crafting experience. All materials will be provided. Lo is an Armenian-American immigrant to Aotearoa and a lifelong crafter. Across crochet, jewelry, and beading, their work is a multimedia meditation on whakapapa and the natural world. They are excited to share the joys of Armenian needlelace, an ancient craft that is as intricate and resilient as the Armenian women who have passed it down through the generations. I don’t quite have the words for how proud I am of these two. To my beautiful best friend @lo_aleen, what a privilege it has been to hear your poetry grow and change over this past year. To watch you push yourself further into that tender, vulnerable place I’ve spent so many years of my life dedicated to. And then, to hear you stand before our city and speak the stories of your tūpuna into a room full of people willing to listen. How extraordinary you are! And to @parminderrrr, hearing you tell the stories of our South Asian whānau touched me so so so deeply. How beautiful that we get to be the ones who remember them. That their stories have found their way into our mouths. That we are not only speaking on their behalf, but speaking ourselves into a future they may never have imagined. Since returning from Worlds, I’ve wanted so badly to bring more of the spirit of slam poetry home to Wellington. To build spaces where we can witness each other in all our tenderness, anger, history and hope. Last Saturday, these two champions reminded me exactly why I’ve dedicated so much of my life to this artform. In times as difficult as these, I believe we need art more than ever. We need places where we can soften without surrendering, where we can be vulnerable without being ashamed, where we can imagine a world kinder than the one we’ve inherited. That future begins with us. With funding art. Making art. Buying tickets. Filling rooms. Listening to stories that aren’t our own. Choosing, again and again, to keep our hearts open when the world gives us every reason to close them. I am so proud of my two champions! How lucky we are to have inherited so many stories, and how lucky I am to be alive alongside the people who will carry them forward. ❤️ 📸: @chris_mckeown70 . . . #WellingtonPoetry #PoetrySlamNZ #WellingtonRegionalPoetrySlam #SpokenWordNZ #PoetryInMotionWellington by @lo_aleen

NZ Foreign Minister Winston Peters addressed a large delegation of Parliamentarians and invited guests yesterday. He was talking about Foreign policy highlights and challenges over this Parliamentary term. The audience included some Israeli officials and a local Zionist institution that supports them. We thought it would be a good opportunity to remind Winston Peters and his international guests to sanction Israel. This was a grassroots rally, including people from various local groups across the activist community #sanctionisraelnow #freepalestine🇵🇸 by @lo_aleen
From our corner of the world in Aotearoa New Zealand, we stand in solidarity with the Armenians who were diplaced from Artsakh in 2023. Today we gathered together for a vigil, 3 years after Azerbaijan invaded Artsakh and led to the ethnic cleansing of over 100,000 Armenians. We marched with Armenian and Artsakh flags on Parliament grounds, through the streets of Wellington, and to the Turkish Embassy. Together we made a clear statement: we remember the genocidal actions of Azerbaijan, we remember New Zealand's silence and complicity, we remember the people and the land of Artsakh, and we demand their right to return to their ancestral homeland. Thank you to Geoff for compiling and sharing history with us, to Sevan for teaching us so much about Armenian resilience and joy, to Anahid and Zabel for bringing your Armenian wairua to this event, to Demetri for standing in solidarity as a member of the Greek community, and to Ben for helping us see the possibilities of generational reconciliation and healing between Turkish and Armenian people. We are also so grateful for our allies who showed up today in support, particularly our Māori and Pasifika friends who deeply understand the harms of colonisation and displacement. Special thank you to @mary8black for bravely documenting your experience of blockade and displacement from Artsakh - today, your voice traveled across the world as we played your videos over the speaker at New Zealand Parliament. We have not forgotten you and your people, and we will continue to fight for your right to return to your land. #artsakh #artsakhstrong #armeniandiaspora #armeniangenocide #wellingtonnz by @lo_aleen
We’re absolutely blown away by the talent, curiosity, and generosity of our participants at the Armenian needlelace workshop yesterday! We went on a journey together through culture and craft, reflecting on the resilience of the Armenian women who have passed down this ancient practice through generations and genocide. In this beautiful space, we used our hands and some yarn to connect in a way that words sometimes fall short of. Thank you so much to @micro_mill_ for giving us the platform to share this piece of Armenian culture, and thank you to all the workshop participants for engaging with warmth and respect. We can’t wait to see what we continue to create together! . . . #armenia #armenianneedlelace #janyak by @lo_aleen
It has been an incredible weekend of learning, laughing, eating, dancing, and organising with @just4pal ! It was so powerful to witness the magic of community coming together in the diaspora - Palestinians and Armenians both organise for justice in our homelands across the globe, but our relationships on and with this whenua give us the power to transform the entire world. Ngā mihi nui to the organisers of J4P, SJP, and the mana whenua who facilitated this incredibly special space. Your wisdom, expertise, and deep love is an inspiration and guide as we at Remember the Armenians work towards the dignity of our own people and a free Palestine. . . . #wellingtonnz #freepalestine #justiceforpalestine #armeniandiaspora #rememberthearmenians by @lo_aleen
