The distant Maasai gifted fourteen sacred cows to the US Ambassador as a token of love after September 11th. "To heal a sorrowing heart, give something that is dear to your own" Wilson Kimeli Naiyomah explained the gift.

So it was with so many Americans on September 12th.

Today, I remember September 11th. But I also long to unbury the America of September 12th. by @localpassportdad

Happy Birthday to the girl who:

> Always goes with the flow, so long as the flow has an agenda and start time.

> If asked to climb Half Dome, visit 100 countries, learn new languages, or stay in the homes of strangers, the answer will be a near-immediate "yes." If asked to refill her own water bottle after she's already in bed, the answer will probably be "no."

> If someone produced a movie that combined While You Were Sleeping and Bluey, I'm sure that would be the one movie she would choose if stranded on a desert island and could only pick one movie to watch on repeat.

> Has perfected her fried egg craft: over easy with a crispy edge, flipped for about three seconds and removed immediately. Salt and pepper after removing from the not non-stick pan. If the oil isn't HOT HOT HOT before you crack, start over.

> In general, smaller = cuter. True for people, ponies, and puffins. Not for bugs, though. In fact, bugs of most any size may produce a lovable shriek that could break the sound barrier.

> Can fall asleep after a few seconds of being in a moving vehicle, even if said vehicle surely exceeds a clown car in both noise and discomfort.

> If you created a job combining a librarian and culturally curious traveler, she'd call it the perfect job. But then, that's kinda what she's already doing right now.

 > Lives like she believes the moral arc of the universe bends towards justice, learns like the world is ever-new, reads like books are on the brink of extinction, and loves like there's no tomorrow.

Another trip around the sun*!

This year, I found:

•My family closer: though the track record is imperfect, listening during dedicated, recurring scheduled time with my love @localpassportfamily Preethi + all six super kids 1:1 has made a huge difference for connectedness. Plus plenty of laughs.

•My faith strengthened: I love teaching the teenage scripture class during the week and children’s primary music on Sundays!

•My professional aspirations expanded: my 4th grade teacher rightfully told me that I was “slower than molasses” when it came to writing…I was the "class artist" but certainly received no recognition for my writing. Seeing Unlocked Home Buying Secrets hit #1 on Amazon felt good, but finally putting pen to paper on the myriad ways that the FBI’s Crisis Negotiation tactics have helped raise six kids has been cathartic (book forthcoming).

I still, however, have no idea how to fold a fitted sheet. Maybe before my next birthday.

To paraphrase Emerson: "My friends have come to me unsought (and largely undeserved). The great God gave them to me. Shall I not call God the beautiful?”

In the Bureau, agents often favored the approachable, "agent's agent" style of someone like Louis Freeh—a Director famous for playfully evading his own security detail to go visit his mother. Robert Mueller was not that kind of Director.

He was a known hero from his heroic time as a Marine in Vietnam, a man who famously left behind highly prestigious, lucrative legal posts simply to prosecute homicides and comfort victims. There was a distinct formality to him. Historian David McCullough once described George Washington as a man who led from a bit of a distance - not as “one of the boys” but one with “exceptional, almost excessive self-command.” So it was with Mueller.

Especially notable was his willingness to disagree with, and even submit a resignation letter to, the President of the United States on the issue of unwarranted NSA surveillance of American citizens. President George W. Bush looked at this man of integrity, listened, and was moved to change his own mind on the subject.

He was buttoned-up, and he expected excellence. His leadership was rooted in an unshakeable core of integrity. When he entered a room, you didn't need to stand up at attention, and you certainly didn't need to offer formalities or long prefaces. You just needed to give him the facts.
Trends in leadership come and go. But there is something deeply grounding about a leader whose moral rudder is so strong, you know the ship will stay true. That was the example—and the legacy—of 'Bobby Triple Sticks.

My prayers and condolences to Director Mueller's family and loved ones.

I wrote this book because I got sick of seeing friends get taken advantage of during their home buying journeys.

Seeing it hit #1 on Amazon was a reminder that people are really hungry for the truth about buying a home. The market signals are confusing, rates are scary, and so much of the advice out there is contradictory or sometimes just...wrong.

I'm trying something new tomorrow: I’m hosting a free "Cliff's Notes" version of the book in a live session.

No sales pitches. Just <1 hour of me walking through the strategies I used to help my own family and thousands of others avoid the top mistakes home buyers make.

If you know a friend who is thinking about buying a house at any point in the future, feel free to tag them, too. I promise to take care of them even better than Mr. Rogers took care of his cardigans.

Link in comments.

p.s. If you can't make it live but are interested, sign up using the link in the comments anyway—that way I'll know to share the recording with you afterwards. by @localpassportdad

Happy Armenian Christmas/3 Kings Day/12th day of Christmas!

These words distilled after a handful of "Lessons and Carols" services - so many hopes and fears from time immemorial summed in a little Baby - enough to make me feel extra thankful for the condescension of Jesus.

Eve’s seed would crush the serpent's head
To bring life again to those long dead.

Abraham carried Isaac, but the promise he bore
Trusting God had more than a ram in store

Isaiah’s vision of sorrows, a Man acquainted with grief
No beauteous visage, but a Deliverer of lasting relief

Mary, a vessel pure and mild, the Lord did magnify
Enwombed our Salvation, then swaddled in a cry

Simeon the servant, could at long last depart in peace
In his hands, the rise and fall, unending increase

Anna, of great age, the prophetess, praying night and day
Saw Redemption in that little child, bid come and ever stay

Angelic tidings to the shepherds, on their knees to fall
Haste to Bethlehem, then pause in wonder at the stall

The hopes and fears of all the years, creation’s dawn til now
Like the magi, travel time’s expanse, with gifts, we before Him bow

May Shepherds’ joy and Magi’s quest be yours
And glorious as the angels be your song
May you echo Mary’s faithful “Yes”
And the Peace of Christ sustain you all year long by @localpassportdad

Just like that, we have three kids in the Church youth program!

Your curiosity is indeed boundless. When we asked where you wanted to share your birthday with friends, you did not hesitate: “Natural History Museum!” Friends and earthquakes and dinosaurs and crystals and the magnitude of the wonders of space - quite fitting for you. Your questions routinely push the boundaries of my knowledge, and I've come to love learning with you. You have always been the first to notice when someone is missing, and proceed to run out to make sure they feel fully included. Your sense of humor has developed quite fully this year and I love our little inside jokes. You're right at the age where “6 7" is still captivating, but, like your peers, deny all attachment when pressed: "little kid stuff” I guess. You now outrun me at distance and outread me in nonfiction. I am proud you have learned endurance in it all. I love you, T. by @localpassportdad

So grateful for these three and the whole primary for their singing + signing + playing + talks during the special primary program at church today. What a glimpse of heaven.

I've always said teaching seminary is my favorite calling (and we even get to teach over zoom here!) but primary chorister is REALLY giving it a run for its money. by @localpassportdad

I'm proud of the bulwark against gerrymandering that the State of California courageously set up under Republican Gov. Schwarzenegger in 2010. Unlike the recent Texas redistricting, which never received a vote from the people of that great state, CA Prop 50 is *temporary* and reaffirms the California Citizens Redistricting Commission's authority to draw congressional districts after the next census. Yes on Prop 50 is a controlled burn to curb the blaze already raging against democratic institutions. Prop 50 is hope. by @localpassportdad

Happy 15th, big guy!

You've got a lot of drive, humor, and at least a couple of Radio Flyer red wagon's worth of rizz. You inspire me every day. I wonder if things have come easily for you or if you just manage to make them look easy - switching schools mid-year and making new friends, taking on new roles at home, church and school. When people say to wait until kids are old enough to remember new experiences - like trying new foods, new countries, tasting new ideas, etc...I always think of how you remember the most minute detail of the experiences we've shared and how those experiences have shaped you.

I've got a countdown on my phone for the day you graduate from school - just over 1,000 days left - and most likely will leave home. Not because I am looking forward to it, but because I crave making the most of every day that I'm blessed to still learn from you so close up. Losing an arm-wrestle and footrace to you definitely represented a bigger turning point than turning 40 ever did. Thank you for humbly keeping me humble. I love you, N, now and forever. by @localpassportdad

May the covenant path rise up to meet you.
With angels on the winds round about to bear you up
May the Son smile warm upon your face,
And may the dews of heaven distill gently upon your fields.

May the fortitude of those who have gone before
Matriarchs and Patriarchs, cut you a path out of discouragement
May the Comforter bring remembrance of all things to your mind
And may the Lord’s steady hand guide you all of your days. by @localpassportdad
