Think creating a beautiful, waterwise landscape is only for experienced gardeners? Think again! 🌱

With no previous landscaping experience, this homeowner transformed her entire yard herself using free resources from Localscapes and @conservationgardenpark.

She wanted something more vibrant than a traditional lawn—something full of color, texture, and purpose. Today, a flowing river of red creeping thyme creates a stunning focal point (and a favorite spot for buzzing bees 🐝), while providing year-round interest and habitat for pollinators.

Her entire yard reflects Localscapes principles, with in-line drip irrigation, inviting pathways, thoughtfully selected plants, and plenty of lessons learned along the way. Her advice? Start small. Choose a few plants you love, scatter them throughout your landscape, and let the process teach you.

She never expected to learn so much about plants, or to have neighbors regularly stop by in awe of her yard! Since planting in 2023, she has continued to share what she’s learned, inspiring neighbors and others in her community to rethink what’s possible. 💚

If you’ve ever struggled with an irrigation system that never seems to work quite right, plants that don’t survive, or weekends spent doing endless yard maintenance, you’re not alone. 🏡 Designing or renovating a landscape can feel overwhelming, especially when you’re working with a budget.

…that’s exactly why Localscapes was created! ✨

Developed by a team of horticulturists, landscape designers, irrigation experts, maintenance professionals, and water conservation specialists, Localscapes takes the science behind successful landscape design and turns it into a simple, practical approach anyone can follow.

At the heart of Localscapes are five essential elements. Together, they create landscapes that are beautiful, easier to maintain, and designed to thrive in Utah while using water wisely.

Swipe through to explore each of the five elements and see how they work together to create landscapes you’ll enjoy for years to come!

Keeping lawn in a central open shape allows sprinkler systems to work more efficiently. Your central open shape can also be other materials like gravel, pavement, pavers, ground cover, or any low-lying, relatively flat material—especially if you want something even more water thrifty.

Rethinking maintenance as part of landscape design saves time, energy and more of your Saturday. For example, placing gathering areas like patios, decks, or informal seating outside of your lawn means fewer areas to irrigate and maintain.

Just like gathering areas, activity zones like trampolines, play sets, sheds, veggie gardens, and hot tubs should be placed outside of your lawn area. You get the same benefits plus no more objects to mow around!

Narrow lawn strips are difficult to irrigate and require a lot of maintenance. In contrast, paths between elements of your landscape mean less work and you might even visit areas of the landscape you used to ignore.

Choosing the right Utah-friendly plants to fill in the rest of your landscape means less time and money replacing struggling plants and more time enjoying a beautiful landscape that naturally thrives!

She didn’t just design a beautiful backyard, she designed a place to live. 🏡

Last time, we showed you Maria’s front yard. Now, we’re stepping into the backyard, a space created for family, food, rest, and connection. Her landscape brings all five Localscapes elements to life, proving that a waterwise yard can also be beautiful, functional, and deeply personal. ✨

A grass Central Open Shape gives her grandchildren room to run, play, and camp under the stars. Thoughtfull planned waterwise Planting Beds bring year-round color, texture, and habitat. Pathways invite you to slow down and explore, while Gathering Areas create room for meals, memories, and quiet moments outdoors. Activity Zones make space for the things Maria loves most, from harvesting vegetables to relaxing in her potting shed and experimenting with new plants in her secret garden. 🌱

Together, these elements create more than a water-saving landscape. They create a yard designed around the people who use it. 💚

That’s the goal of Localscapes: not simply replacing grass, but creating outdoor spaces that are more enjoyable, functional, and suited to the way you live.
