Sydney punk/hardcore veteran Adrian Kelly is finally getting his flowers as the bassist of Secret World - the band had just returned from a massive US tour with Drain, No Pressure, and Haywire when we had this chat. We dig into all of that, as well as his other band Phantoms, before he flips the script and takes the pod fully off the rails in this latest episode of Music Is My Life. by @lochlanwatt

Nearly a year ago we all made the pilgrimage into the dead centre of Australia for Blacken Open Air. A festival born out of The Black Wreath, a metal institution providing a home for artists in the desert with a live music venue, studio and record label all under its umbrella. This space means so much to the people who live in Mparntwe/Alice Springs and the broader metal/punk/rock community across the continent. Blacken is probably the most remote (and best) festival in the world attracting a loving and passionate group of people from far corners of the globe.

Right now they need your help! A crowdfunding campaign has been launched recently to raise enough funds to secure the location The Black Wreath HQ sits on… and TODAY IS BLACK THURSDAY. Every donation made today will be matched dollar for dollar (up to 50k). If they achieve their goal it will secure the future of live music in the desert and allow The Black Wreath to keep putting on incredible festivals. We don’t want to see it go into the hands of greedy developers and want to see more amazing events and a space for musicians to hone their skills for generations to come. It would seriously help if you can pick up a shirt or a ticket to their next event or maybe even become a life member!

I was lucky enough to be asked to shoot the last Blacken and here are a selection of photos to show proof of how sick this event is. Seriously the best location and curation I’ve ever seen from a festival. I hope to be back soon🤘🖤 taken in Mparntwe by @lochlanwatt

Deafheaven's Australian tour kicks off this weekend, though sadly Nothing will not be making it as planned due to delays in the visa process. Just know that I pushed hard to get the job done properly for six months, right up until the 11th hour, and that I'm probably more bummed than you are. I'm sad for Nothing and everyone else who has been let down by the outcome here. We were *so* close, but bureaucracy and the clock beat us out in the end.

SPY is now the direct support, and a couple of openers have stepped up with a week's notice to save the day and keep the mixed bill theme intact. Gloam will treat Perth to their heavy shoegaze sound while Peace Ritual will bless the east coast with some dreamy alt-pop-indie rock. It is nice to at least be able to turn this into something exciting for some cool Australian acts.

Tickets are fast approaching capacity for what will still be some very epic shows and I look forward to seeing you out there at a number of them! by @lochlanwatt

One year of Ash + Soil. This release was the first step into a new and more broadly collaborative incarnation of RUN. Although 2026 has been quiet for the band externally, this experiment has continued into the writing of a debut full-length thst is fast approaching completion. With unique, layered packaging and a King Yosef remix of 'Autumn' on the b-side, the final copies of this 7" are now available on bandcamp for $15 including postage to anywhere in Australia. by @lochlanwatt

Poison The Well's tour with Haywire, Iron Mind, and a stack of sick local openers kicks off in Perth this Sunday, so here's an old photo of my mate Cam and I sweating Jeff the last time they were here in 2009 to remind you. Limited tickets remain for Adelaide and Melbourne! by @lochlanwatt
