“Most people make the mistake of thinking design is what it looks like. People think it’s this veneer – that the designers are handed this box and told, ‘Make it look good!’ That’s not what we think design is. It’s not just what it looks like and feels like. Design is how it works.”

-Steve Jobs, reflecting on the philosophy behind the iPod.

Squares or Rectangles?

How does synthetic slate look with a 10 inch reveal vs. 8 inch reveal vs. 6 inch?

We struggled to find answers to this question several years ago. After installing homes all across Indiana and Illinois, we discovered the factors that affect the way the slate looks (hint, there are optical illusions based on the roof pitch/slope). taken in Locke & Ladder by @lockeladder

When an unplanned change occurs during your home project, is that good news or bad news?

That depends on the contractor you hired.

You want a contractor who is as discerning as you are.

That is the difference between achieving the dream outcome you want on your home project or falling short.

Will my roof survive a wind storm?

It is critical that your roof system is rated to sustain heavy wind loads common in your geographic location. We recommend discussing the desired wind rating with your contractor to ensure you don't have to mess with costly repairs or wind claims.

Installation method directly affects the wind rating and resistance of any roof system, and especially synthetic roofing.

For example, ring shank nails have a higher wind tolerance than smooth nails (nearly DOUBLE). This is why smooth nails are not allowed to be used with synthetic Slate or Cedar materials such as Brava Roof Tile. Screws have an even higher wind tolerance than ring shanks, providing an extra 23 mph of resistance.

The reveal or exposure makes a difference. (8'' reveal with ring shank nails has a 110 mph rating while 10'' exposure has a 90 mph rating). Screws can take it the wind rating up to 130 mph.

There are programs, such as "Fortified Roof", that have additional requirements when it comes to decking, locked down edges/specialty drip edge, starter considerations, etc. Following program guidelines like this may increase the wind resistance rating. taken in Locke & Ladder by @lockeladder

How important are snow guards? And do you need them?

When the snow that has accumulated on your roof goes through freeze-thaw cycles, it turns to ice underneath.

On metal and synthetic roofing, this creates a hazard because the snow and ice can slide off the roof. This can be dangerous if it lands on a person or pet, as well as create damage to property.

Having a properly designed snow retention system based on your geographic location is critical when purchasing a synthetic or metal roof system.

What's the difference between solid synthetic slate tiles and hollow tiles? And when and where should they be used?

When installing a Brava synthetic roofing system, it is important to know the difference.

Hollow tiles, which have a hollow back with a ribbed structure, use less material and weigh less. They allow you to achieve that amazing slate roof look that still has great structural integrity, while also saving money on material.

However, solid tiles are actually better to install when the tile needs to be cut to a shape. If you cut a hollow tile, you will be able to tell that it has a hollow back because the edge will not be the same thickness as the rest of the tile.

One tile is not better than the other. They each just have specific uses.

One saves money on material without losing structural integrity. The other is heavier, but ensures the roof has an authentic slate look in places where it matters. Both are beautiful and amazing for your roof.

You wouldn’t spend $50 million on a blockbuster movie and leave a boom mic in the shot.

Why is taste so important? Steve Jobs attributed taste as the single biggest attribute separating Apple from it's lesser competitors.

We believe taste is not something you are born with. Taste is developed. Taste is curated. Taste comes with intention and great observational skills. If you are paying attention as you are exposed to the worlds finest, to man's greatest accomplishments, you begin to absorb and understand quality.

Your palette gets developed no differently than a muscle being exercised in the gym. It comes with time and consistent exposure. Your aesthetic understanding of the world is sharpened as you surround yourself with great people doing great things.

After taking inspiration from some stellar architects and a bit of travel, we have been coaching our clients to go with flat pans over striated when choosing metal standing seam roofing.

Sophisticated. Elegant. Timeless.

Most companies push striated because most fabricators make it that way to prevent oil canning. After discussing pros and cons and understanding the aesthetic objectives of our clients, we are able to land on their dream outcome. It doesn’t happen by accident. taken in Locke & Ladder by @lockeladder
