Glen Paul Heggstad
May 24, 1952 - November 20, 2025

Glen peacefully began his ride across the cosmos surrounded by loved ones after a long struggle with cancer. He is survived by daughters Jane, Skye and Nina. During the last few weeks of his life he spent joyfully saying goodbye to loved ones. And as expected, one moment Glen was laughing and joking and the next he passed with a lasting smile.

A man who always followed his passions, half of Glen’s adult life was consumed by riding motorcycles around the earth, and the other half teaching martial arts. He is the author of two best-selling adventure travel books with proceeds donated to international aid groups. He is also featured on several television documentaries including the National Geographic Channel. His mission was to change the world through his writings and teaching martial arts.

He recently designed, built, and donated a 1.8 million dollar, 8,000sf martial arts center for youth wrestling and Jiu Jitsu. His plan was to keep the school running for the next three centuries. As a strong advocate of yoga and meditation, Glen’s favorite quote from Carl Jung—“Those who look outward, dream, those who look inward, awake.”

As a closet philanthropist, Glen generously supported various Human Rights organizations, environmental causes and political campaigns. For those similarly motivated, Glen’s preference would have been to support Doctors Without Borders.
Glen often advocated that if your dreams don’t scare you, then you’re not dreaming big enough.

During cancer battles, in our search for a cure, sometimes the treatments become more damaging than the disease itself. As frequently promised, I will never die from prostate cancer. However, over the last six difficult years with multiple courses of radiation while being injected with various poisons, treatments have complicated matters. Due to radiation cooked vocal cords, burned throat muscles and fried taste buds, I’m temporarily unable to speak or swallow, thus compromising the ability to receive sufficient nutrition. And as a debilitating fatigue limits my mobility, inserting a feeding tube is a necessary next step. Surprisingly though, it’s a simple outpatient surgery and not as bad as it sounds.

Experiencing seven doses of plutonium during my time as a Big Pharma guinea pig we knew that we were kicking the can down the road and that Plutonium would eventually cause leukemia or other side effects like destroying bone marrow necessary to produce hemoglobin. So with insufficient red cells to carry oxygen just walking from room to room is challenging. Because that clinical trial was so new, the ultimate outcomes were unknown…but I realized that when signing up. Yet that’s still not the end of this story. As we all know, there is always a workaround for life’s little hiccups. Please join me in believing that with an attitude of gratitude nothing is impossible. by @locoviking

While brother Brad and I spent 40 years motorcycling the US, Mexico, Central America, Asia and the Middle East, I often warned him that we must always keep a fresh challenge lest we become the old dogs on the porch. Suggestions? by @locoviking

Tears of joy with Glen and Anthony on the first day opening the new dojo. A forty-five year dream comes to fruition from pure grit and determination. (Breathe with the soles of the feet so soft as to not ruffle a single hair in your nose.)

On an early morning quiet meditation, a divine energy draws me deeper into the stillness of the eye of a swirling cosmic hurricane. A gentle pumping diaphragm sets the pace as a giddy eagerness tugs my conscience mind inward to reconfigure my subconscious. An ancient universal journey through innerspace progresses into a blissful hyperawareness with startling clarity. Absent sensory input, a tantalizing bright golden energy prompts a plunge into a dazzling, elusive healing. Sometimes we must close our eyes in order to see.

Controlled inhaling within ancient rhythms of distant ocean waves triggers subtle electrical fireballs shivering up my spine, flowing unrestrained into cultivating a mysterious pineal gland. Cellular encoded knowledge flickers undisguised in fleeting moments barely within my reach. Paralyzing negativity dissolves in a sensing of the rotation of the earth while murmuring that there is so far to go in eliminating life’s illusions. With an attitude of gratitude and a degree of soft satisfaction comes the realization that the ultimate conclusion to martial art is the manifestation of spiritual discovery. by @locoviking

As a committed Viking voyager there are mixed emotions about returning home from a short, phenomenal journey up the coast to the Canadian border and back. But being cancer-free and rolling on the mat again is surely the right path until I’m eighty. Valhalla can wait. by @locoviking
