Review of THE SLANTWISE HISTORIES by Alix E. Harow

“The Slantwise Histories brings together most of Harrow’s shorter work, along with five stories original to the collection, and as the title suggests (intentionally or not), it reflects Harrow’s Emily Dickinson-like approach to telling the truth, but telling it slant. Again, there are sidewise looks at fairy tales, history, witches, and ghosts, along with a couple of cool librarians and even a wry nod to O. Henry.”

Review of THE CHILDREN by Melissa Albert

“YA author Melissa Albert makes her adult debut with The Children, a haunted house story that follows the travails of two adults who, as children, were made famous by their mother’s literary pursuits. Opening with Guinevere “Guin” Sharpe promoting her memoir of growing up with her famous mother, The Children hints early on that not all was grand in the Sharpe household. As the pages turn, Albert rolls out more hints of Guin’s complicated childhood until it is clear that there was something hungry in the house she grew up in, and that her mother made a deal for fame that exacted a heavy price from the lives of those around her.”

Review of ENGINES OF REASON by Adrian Tchaikovsky

“In Engines of Reason, the sequel to Elder Race (2021), Adrian Tchaikovsky continues the exploration of the collision between magical and materialist views of the world and, more significantly, how the stories they generate interact with the world-as-it-is. In literary-categorical terms, this means that these books exploit the tensions and overlaps between the genre territories we call “fantasy” and “science fiction.””

Review of THE ROUSE by China Miéville

“After last year, having read Mark Z. Danielewski’s Tom’s Crossing (1,232 pages and just over 550,000 words) and Marguerite Young’s Miss MacIntosh, My Darling (1,336 pages and a scratch under 700,000 words), I’m no longer intimidated by very long, very challenging novels. When China Miéville announced that The Rouse, his first solo adult novel in fifteen years, would be over 1,200 pages, I wasn’t overawed but rather intrigued. I wanted to see what someone as formally inventive and erudite as Miéville would do with such a large canvas. But as hardened as I’ve become to doorstoppers, I was still ill-prepared for the allusive, strange beast that is The Rouse.”

Review of SLOW BURN by Amal Singh

“Portal fantasies, where characters travel through some kind of magical gateway to another world, are a staple of speculative fiction, and the subgenre includes a wide range of works from the recent Piranesi by Susanna Clarke, to children’s classics like C.S. Lewis’s Narnia books. In his new novel Slow Burn, Amal Singh references another classic portal fantasy, naming part one of his book “Through the Looking Glass.” It’s an apt callback to Lewis Carroll’s Alice, as Singh’s protagonist, hapless and struggling actor Rishi Tripathi, ends up falling through a mirror into an alternate version of his Mumbai, and, seemingly, into an alternate version of his own life.”
