If you wonder what this book is about, know that the title could have been "Everything You Always Wanted to Know About Street Lights in Los Angeles * But Were Afraid to Ask." The book is a wonderfully researched social history of street lighting in Los Angeles, and is illustrated by dozens of photographs from yours truly.

I will just put this out there and stop for now: the book will be released in the fall, but is available for PRE-ORDER. What does it mean? It means it is available now FOR GOOD. Since getting the iPhone 17 Pro in the Spring, I’ve taken it instead of the camera for repeated visits like the Griff when I wanted to focus on running and no exceptional sky conditions were expected.
.
I usually shoot directly in the @lightroom Mobile app so to retrieve my files easily in Lightroom CC (which is horrible and I only use it for the iPhone photos), and for the iPhone to apply less of its computational / AI processing to the “raw” files.
.
And yet, I was slightly annoyed and surprised yesterday when I realized that the darkest photos taken with the Lightroom app camera were insanely noisy, because the sensor of the iPhone is what it is, and it excels at low light when paired with Apple’s processing, with all the downsides of significant AI sharpened and denoised looks and less editing margin, but given the native low light mode I’d definitely take that over the insane noise of the less processed Lr image, where I basically have to run the LR denoise to 100 to make the photo acceptable and yet this introduces a ton of artifacts.

The Court of Freedom at the Forest Lawn cemetery in Glendale is a fascinating place. It feels out of time, out of geography. Also out of politics with an esthetic that matches more the East Coast and even more the European Visions of National Glory of the late Nineteenth Century and the first half of the Twentieth Century. Through the lens of Hollywood, of course.

What I love about LA is that there are grand things hidden. I had no idea that the Forest Lawn cemetery in Glendale had a full-scale, Italian bronze replica of Michelangelo’s David.

And many other wonders. I didn’t get all the way where I wanted to go because the grounds are immense and I parked and you can easily walk 45 minutes at a good pace to cross it all.
.
I might go back because I want to see Sam Cooke’s grave.

This is the true visual story of how dawn unfolded yesterday morning at the Griff.

Even at six in the morning it was too hot for running so I hiked and added a weight exercise by bringing the @fujifilmx_us X-H2 + XF33 and GFX 50Sii + 23mm. The photos are displayed in chronological order.

The Crossroads of the World (1936) and the neighboring Church of the Blessed Sacrament (1904-1928-1954) are two landmarks on the Sunset Boulevard.
The Crossroads of the World is told to be America’s first open-air shopping mall, while in Hollywood’s golden age the Church of the Blessed Sacrament was attended by many prominent stars. I would have loved to visit it inside but the opening hours reported by google were not accurate.
.
Nevertheless, I am glad I stopped by. Will probably return with a more interesting light, like early morning or late afternoon. We always drive by on the way back to the Griff but that’s never a good time to stop and take a few photos.
