✨ Episode 2 of SPACED OUT is here! ☄️

This time, I’m taking you inside a space with a pretty incredible second act. Artist Rich Loen (@loen.artist) took an old auto shop on Carling Avenue and transformed it into a creative hub that’s part workshop, part art gallery, and full of surprises.

You might already know Rich’s work from the Awesome Box, an interactive public art installation that has popped up in places like the @bywardmarket, @ottawaartgallery and @natgallerycan. The idea is simple and lovely: record a kind message for a stranger, then listen to one someone else left behind. 💛

Or maybe you’ve driven past his giant banana sign on Carling Avenue, with its ever-changing marquee of quirky messages that leave passing drivers scratching their heads, smiling or wondering what on earth he’s getting at.

Step inside and the surprises continue. The former service bays are now a working studio where Rich and his team dream up, design and build their creations. Next door, a gallery filled with interactive art invites visitors to explore, play and get curious.

Rich and I chatted about the building’s history, what it took to bring his vision to life, and what he hopes people experience when they walk through the doors.

And this is exactly why I started SPACED OUT. I love discovering the stories behind the places we pass every day. Every building has a past life, but it takes someone with a little imagination (okay, a LOT in Rich’s case) to see what it could become. And when they do, they add something pretty special to the fabric of our city.

A big thank you to Rich for opening his doors and sharing his story! Go show Loen Designs some love, and better yet, plan a visit. 🎨

More stories behind Ottawa’s most interesting spaces coming soon. 🚀

✨ Arts Corridor Artwork Spotlight ✨

Discover Kindness Cascade on the York Street steps and Awesome Boxes throughout the Arts Corridor by Rich Loen.

Kindness Cascade visualizes how acts of kindness spread exponentially within social networks. Based on scientific research demonstrating the cascading effect of cooperative behaviour (Fowler & Christakis, 2010), this public artwork represents kindness as a generative force within communities.

Stand at a coloured dot representing a single act of kindness, then follow the lines and experience how that individual act can inspire others.

Accompanying Kindness Cascade on the York Street steps is a temporary interactive public art project: a series of Awesome Boxes that invite you to record and receive messages of kindness. Find them throughout the Arts Corridor at the National Gallery of Canada, the Ottawa Art Gallery, the Ottawa School of Art, and nearby at the OTTAWA sign.
