Jess and Owen’s ceremony was filled with meaningful rituals, and one of the most moving was their handfasting (see also Jess and Owen's ring story). Weddings are full of symbols, and handfasting is one of the oldest, a way of making love, commitment, and intention something you can see and touch. By joining hands, Jess and Owen offered their lives freely to one another, and as the ribbons were tied, they symbolised two stories becoming one. Each ribbon carried its own history. The first ribbon came from Jess’s family. Her mum, Lynne, chose a deep emerald ribbon and had the flowers she wore in her hair on her own wedding day carefully sewn into it, the same flowers Jess’s sister Sammie wore on hers. It carried legacy, love, and the women who walked before Jess. The second ribbon came from Owen’s family. His mum, Joan, took crochet lace from pillowcases that belonged to her own mother, lace believed to be more than a hundred years old, and had it sewn into a ribbon so a piece of Owen’s family history could be woven into this moment. The third ribbon was chosen by Jess and Owen themselves. New, with no history yet, and tied by me, becoming a symbol of the life they are creating, the memories they will make, and the future they are stepping into together. Together, these ribbons represented two families, two histories, and a brand new story being gently tied together, not to restrict, but to remind Jess and Owen that they are supported, surrounded, and deeply loved as they step into their future as one. A packed house for the launch of THE WEIGHT OF WITNESS @loftwestend and hosted by @avidreader tonight, an anthology written by Australian and New Zealand health care workers about their experiences serving in Gaza and published by @readerswritersagainstgenocide. The conversation was a beautiful tribute to the resilience, gratitude and generosity of the Palestinian people and the importance of words; that criticizing a genocide is not antisemitic and how threatening and silencing people who speak up doesn’t alter the truth of the ongoing genocide being committed against the Palestinian people. by @loftwestend

The Loft got a little darker. 🩸 Last weekend @goremotherbrand took over our entire top floor for The BloodBath Ball, celebrating one year of creating queer and arts based events in Brisbane. Two rooms. One huge night. Art installations, vendors, DJs, burlesque, drag, live performances, vampire themed drinks and a crowd who absolutely understood the assignment. Vampire formal.
