Exactly one year ago, today, I woke up confused and hungover like many, many days before that. This time I had completely overslept the start of my shift at work. I was so disoriented and confused with no memory of the night before or even how I got home.

Panicked, I reached out to a good friend and coworker, @ag.blle , to try and make a plan, but I knew something had to change.

This picture is a calendar I brought from @yetch.studio to make my own attempt to quit drinking earlier in the year. It used to have some small glimmers of light but was typically followed by 7-14 dull and dark days in between. I just couldn’t do it on my own.

I was completely defeated and had finally seen my rock bottom. Plans were made and I moved down to Hilton Head Island with my parents, dreading leaving behind my friends and home in Charlotte.

Shortly after, I started outpatient recovery with @southernskyrecovery and could never have imagined the change it would make in my life. Every counselor and every person who showed up for themselves every day was an inspiration to me on this journey. After 9 months and graduating the full program, my life had completely changed. I made lifelong friends in recovery and a completely different outlook on life.

Friends who I thought I would have lost have all continued to be a huge support system for me even from hundreds of miles away. I met my best friend and partner and made a ton of new friends who have all joined my support system when I moved to Savannah with him.

Lighting up that final light on the calendar this morning represents more than I can put into a single post. Each light on that calendar represents one more day where I decided to be a little selfish and put myself first. Not all of them were easy. Many of those little lights represent a day where I would have much rather been at the bar with my friends having just one more drink but chose to enjoy being in and enjoying the moment instead of masking it with a substance.

Thank you to everyone who has watched along with this journey and supported me when I shared my milestones. I’m so grateful to have made it this far and can’t wait to continue this journey. by @logann_lanee
