Assessments should always answer the question:

“What’s my lowest hanging fruit to improve in my player development process?”

Assessments drive movement prep, programming, recovery, pre-throw, post-throw, and more. They give us insight into why athlete moves how they move on the field and whether areas to improve are more physical issues or skill issues.

Primary Movement Pattern: Rotation

In the first superset of each training day or our “A-Block”, we train rotation / extension at different loads, velocities, and progressions just like you would other movement patterns. We can have different emphasis for rotational / extension exercises such as: rear hip loading, sequencing, pelvic rotation, and torso rotational strength / velocity.

I once heard on a podcast “Why emphasize a technically and neurologically demanding movement pattern that is significantly different than the athletes primary neurologically demanding movement pattern.” With so many ways to train and improve the different aspects of rotational ability, it’s most beneficial to actually train rotation instead of other traditional “A-Block explosive movements”.

Olympic lifts = high load, vertical shin, hip dominant, vertical power production

Loaded / Resisted Jumps = can be modified to fit vertical, linear, or lateral force directions, can be at higher speeds, involve leaving the ground and smaller joint rotations

Rotation = lateral, rotational, and vertical ground forces in a pelvis > torso > lead arm > implement sequence @onbaseu @mytpi while requiring high range of motion demands in hip IR, T-spine rotation, and shoulder abduction, adduction, and ER/IR.

We will perform a large variety of different force production exercises at different loads and velocities throughout a training week including plenty of jumps, sprints, and lifting, but our primary emphasis and what we train when most neurologically fresh is ROTATION.

If you can’t rotate well with power and velocity, you will have a very hard time competing in rotation / extension events such as baseball, softball, and golf. taken in United States by @logbarrett

Baseball development is more than skill work alone. ⚾️

The goal is to understand the athlete, develop the physical qualities that support performance, and connect those qualities back to the skill.

Strength. Power. Movement. Physical preparation. Hitting. Throwing.

Each piece matters — but development happens when they work together.

Physical Potential + Skill Proficiency = Development

That’s the athlete development process being built at The Baseball Center NYC in collaboration with Evolve Physical Therapy:

Assess → Prepare → Develop → Apply → Re-Assess

“The Rotational Movement Pattern”

It’s the end product of a lot of different moving parts and physical abilities. 🌪️⚾️🥎

Lower-body strength matters.
→ Producing force into the ground 💥

Rotational strength and speed matter.
→ Producing and transferring force through the pelvis and torso 🤝

Upper-body strength matters.
→ Transferring force through the system and ultimately expressing it through the arm, bat, or club 💪🏻

Explosiveness, timing, eccentric abilities, and mobility all matter too 📝

But how those qualities combine within the actual rotational pattern matters more than any one quality in isolation 🤯

Train all of it 🏋🏽‍♂️

Squat variations—especially unilateral work. Hinges. Lateral force production. Jumps. Upper body. Trunk strength. Mobility.

But understand the goal isn’t simply to “get stronger” or “build a bigger engine.”

These are physical qualities that contribute to how an athlete produces force, creates pelvic and torso rotational velocity, accelerates and decelerates segments, and ultimately expresses a repeatable rotational pattern in sport.

Develop the components. Then teach the athlete to express them within the pattern 🔥 taken in New York, New York by @logbarrett

Fall baseball is ending. Winter development shouldn’t start with guessing. ⚾️

This is a fantastic development opportunity prepping for our Live At Bats in January and year long health and performance.

Our U13–U18 8-Week Strength + Throwing Ramp-Up begins by establishing an individual starting point, then using that information to guide each athlete’s strength development, throwing progression, and weekly shoulder/recovery monitoring.

The goal is simple:

Establish a baseline → Train with purpose → Re-assess

Athletes will receive:
• Individual athlete assessment
• 1 hour of Strength and Conditioning each Saturday
• 1 hour of progressive throwing + baseball work
• Weekly shoulder and recovery testing
• A structured transition from fall baseball into winter development

📍 Assessment Day: Saturday, October 24 | 10:00 AM–12:00 PM
📅 Ramp-Up: Saturdays, October 31–December 19 | 8:00–10:00 AM

As a basic premise, what does it mean to “Train Rotation”?

Rotation is more than just turning.

In baseball, we usually see the end result.

The separation. The bat speed. The throwing velocity. The positions an athlete reaches during a swing or delivery.

But rotational performance is built from multiple pieces working together.

Hip rotation. Pelvic rotation. Trunk rotation. Shoulder motion.

How much motion an athlete has access to matters.
Where that motion comes from matters.
And how quickly they can produce and transfer force through those positions matters.

That’s why assessing rotation isn’t about chasing more mobility everywhere.

It’s about understanding what the athlete has access to, what they can control, and what they can ultimately express in the skill.

Access the position → develop the physical qualities → apply them to the skill. taken in New York, New York by @logbarrett

⚾️ PITCHING DEVELOPMENT IS MORE THAN THROWING HARD.

It’s about building the athlete, developing the mechanics, and creating a plan that prepares you to perform when it matters most.

Introducing our 18 - WEEK PITCHING DEVELOPMENT PROGRAM - designed to take athletes through 3 progressive phases:

🔷 FOUNDATION - Building movement quality, strength, power & body control
🔷 DEVELOPMENT - Build throwing volume, experience & consistency
🔷 PERFORMANCE - Develop intensity, velocity & competition readiness

But development doesn’t stop when the throwing session ends.

Our program also emphasizes pre-pitch preparation and recovery routines to help athletes prepare their bodies to throw, establish consistent routines, and recover between sessions.

🔥Pre-Pitch Routines
Mobility, Activation, Movement Prep, Throwing Preparation

🧊 Recovery Routines
Mobility, Recovery Strategies, Post-Throwing Care, Building Consistency

Led by a team combining sports physical therapy, pitching expertise, and performance training, our goal is simple:

Build better movers. Better pitchers. Better athletes.

📆 6 weeks per phase
💪🏼 2 sessions per week
🔥 Limited spots available

Your development doesn’t happen overnight. Trust the process. Build the foundation. Earn the performance.

Great new article about @paradigmpds

They’re doing some really interesting work helping baseball programs better understand their players, their roster, and the information behind winning.

Awesome guys that love what they do and care about doing a great job.

Player development is a process, not a location.

At Manhattan, position players are carrying their individual development needs directly into the baseball environment.

After the team warm-up, athletes move into individualized pre-hitting preparation based on what we identified through assessment — movement-access work where it’s needed, and jump variations targeted toward their output or braking needs — before transitioning into hitting.

The point isn’t the mobility drill or the jump.

The point is that the information we have about the athlete shouldn’t disappear when baseball practice starts.

Integrated development means physical development, skill development, and movement/health considerations informing one another around the same athlete and the same development goals.

The cage, field, weight room, and training room are different environments. They shouldn’t become separate development plans.

When those pieces reinforce one another, we give the athlete a better opportunity to express their skill, build physical capacity, and stay available to perform.

One athlete. Multiple environments. One development process. taken in Manhattan, New York by @logbarrett
