We’re proud to welcome Tina Gharavi as jury member of the XR Competition at NewImages Festival 2026 ✨

BAFTA and Sundance-nominated director, Tina Gharavi is known for powerful, intimate works exploring identity, power and marginal voices. Trained as a painter and filmmaker between the US and France, her films have been screened internationally and include I Am Nasrine (BAFTA-nominated) and African Queens: Cleopatra for Netflix.

She currently divides her time between Paris and Newcastle.

💖 Last night, Anna Smith hosted an exclusive screening of Virginia Woolf’s Night and Day followed by a Q&A featuring director Tina Gharavi, screenwriter Justine Waddell, and lead actor Haley Bennett who also provided a moving introduction to the film on what this woman-focused film means to her.

🎥 Tina shares stories of filming in the North East of England with a largely female cast, Haley delves into what drew her to the story from a feminist perspective, and Justine shares how she adapted Virginia Woolf’s novel into a script, reflecting on Virginia Woolf’s life and how she may have lived in our era.

✨ NIGHT AND DAY is described by director Tina Gharavi as an ‘unromantic comedy’, which follows Katharine Hilbery, a passionate astronomer fighting Edwardian patriarchy to study at the turn of the 20th century.

The Crew (an excerpt !) ❤️

So, so proud of the AMAZING crew of Virginia Woolf’s Night & Day, which celebrated its world premiere opening at SXSW London.

When the producers first approached me about making Night & Day they asked what my vision for the film was. My answer surprised them: “I don’t have a vision for the film itself—but I do have a vision for the people I want to bring on this journey. I hope to inspire them to challenge the way a period film is told.” Standing here now, I genuinely believe we did that.

This film exists because of an extraordinary group of artists, craftspeople, thinkers, problem-solvers, and collaborators who brought their talent, passion, and imagination to every single day of production. I am forever grateful to each and every one of you.
