PLAY [006] Friday, June 26th! We’re especially excited for this one, with friends and family of PLAY. A night connecting and celebrating generations of Chicago electronic music. From the OGs who helped build the scene to the artists carrying it forward. Featuring Brian Kelly @harlemandirving — founder of the original PLAY series at Danny’s Tavern in 1998 and a driving force in the city’s electronic music community for over three decades. His work as a DJ, producer, and curator has helped shape generations of underground music culture in the city. Today, he continues that legacy through Harlem & Irving, the label he co-founded with Bob Davies, which has a growing catalog of releases and remains a home for exploratory electronic music. The Opus @theopus_beats , one of Chicago’s most influential production duos, who has inspired many of the artists, producers, and selectors shaping Chicago electronic music today. Kevin Johnson and Aaron Smith have spent decades building deep, emotional soundscapes that pull from both underground hip-hop and leftfield electronic music. CEJ @cej_94 , one of the city’s most exciting emerging electronic artists, is help shaping the future of Chicago electronic music through richly textured productions that blend jazz, soul, and electronic sound design. I'm having a great weekend! Finished this untitled (open to suggestions) joint yesterday. The chords were made with a custom wavetable of a square wave moving through harmonic FM ratios that I generated with my own experimental software called Wave Pimp (working title). I'm sure there are better wavetable creation tools out there but doing it myself is a great way to nerd out. Another milestone is my generative/algorithmic video software, Xtal, now supports piping video files into the shaders (this one of trees on Farwell in east Rogers Park)! So here I am taking it for a test drive with chroma splits, pixel slicing, edge glow, and mild posterization. Work in progress track I started on day before show. Working title is Eyelid (open to other suggestions). This is 4th show I've played this year with the Elektron Tonverk as the main instrument along with Intech Studio Grid controllers — so nice to have finally been able to minimize my live setup. Lokua is a Chicago based producer and live p/a artist currently focused on minimal, acid-laden, flooriented, swung and polymetric techno. His tools of choice include anything and everything from a laptop and MIDI controllers, to 100s of HP of Eurorack, samplers, drum machines, and polysynths. He brings with him over 25+ years of songwriting experience. He has co-founded the Moment Sound collective who together held down residencies focused on live electronic music and motion graphics at Subterranean, Darkroom, Rodan, Morseland, and other venues across Chicago. Lokua has released tracks on Moment Sound, Don’t Trust Humans, Smooth Agent, Diane’s Hunting Club, CPKAY, and more in addition to self releases. Opening up the night is KFS resident Kieran, followed by a live set (a KFS first!) from hardware head Lokua and a closing set by liminal architect Shanti. After ending last spring with a bang, KFS is back with new ideas, new inspiration, and new sounds. Genuary + Jamuary Genuary 15 prompt: Create an invisible object where only the shadows can be seen. Jamuary 15 prompt: Frozen Rivers Forever, Mood: Chaotic, BPM: 11, Key: A Minor, Color: Cerulean Less time to devote to this one but I'm happy with the result. Didn't really capture "shadows" or "rivers" but who cares, you get the message. And in the words of El Producto, if you don't like it, then this obviously wasn't made for you, so fuck you. Genuary + Jamuary Genuary 14 prompt: Everything fits perfectly. Jamuary 14 prompt: A Tender Kind of Dreams, Mood: Dreamy, BPM: 81, Color: Bone White I struggled with this one — hated the Jamuary prompt. Maybe it's just the word tender? Like how 'moist' triggers some people, tender is just...gross. As for the Genuary prompt, that was OK. I purposely embraced imperfection as perfect art/music is not possible; it's a conundrum — a perfect piece could not be perfect without some sort of imperfection. Unfortunately most of the ideas I had for this piece were just too difficult for me to implement and ultimately the frustration of failing over and over again got the best of me and left me with little inspiration to be creative musically, but I think there's something in finishing what you set out to, which for me was simply participating in Genuary yesterday/today, so that's a win.
