Our book of the month is ‘Strength and Sorrow’ by Oyunga Pala.

In Strength and Sorrow, Oyunga Pala takes readers on a deeply personal journey through grief, loss and healing following the death of his elder sister, Nyangi.

As he gathers stories of death and dying from family, friends and strangers, Pala discovers that listening to the grief of others also forces him to confront his own. Memories resurface, old wounds reopen, and the stories of strength, resilience and brokenness begin to reveal his own relationship with loss and life.

Available in store.

Pleasure, Power & Sex📌

What happens when women are in a room where they can talk about sex without shame and judgement.

We talked about the things we were taught about being a ‘good woman’ sexually. About desire, consent, pleasure, sexual labour and the expectations placed on women in and outside the bedroom. Through these honest conversations and reflections we delved into things women rarely get to say out loud.

Talking about pleasure is also talking about power, agency, boundaries, consent and choice and sometimes redesigning sex starts with unlearning what we were told it was supposed to be.

Thank you to every woman in their diversity who came💯📌 Flowers to our hosts @achieng_achoki @n_awinoo and @lolweke taken in Lolwe Books by @lolweke

Happy new month!

Our book of the month this September is ‘Promises’ by Goretti Kyomuhendo.

Promises are like tilapia from Lake Victoria— glittering, evasive… slippery.

‘Promises’ charts the joys and tribulations of Ajuna and her fiancé, Kagaba.Young, highly skilled, and ambitious, both are caught up in financial hardship in their native Uganda. When Kagaba leaves for the UK as an economic immigrant, Ajuna’s happy, fulfilling relationship is under threat. And in the indifferent UK, Kagaba must battle the cold, and the cold shoulder of London.

‘Promises’ exposes the shadow world of illegal immigrants, and the creativity with which people in the legal margins rise to meet an inhumane system. But for both Kagaba and Ajuna, a glimmer of hope comes from unexpected quarters. Populated with an expansive array of vibrant characters, Goretti Kyomuhendo’s novel examines the promises we keep and those we break when relationships are profoundly tested by circumstance and twists of fate. It is a vivid tapestry of Ugandan family life, and catches the universal emotions of love, death, and betrayal.

Available in store.

The orgasm gap.who defines sex.Who iniitaites.Who gives.Who receives.Who decides when it should end.Who is expected to perform pleasure.

These are not personal matters but the consequences of the patriarchy, power relations, gender and the ways we've been taught to understand sex.

The orgasm gap is not antomical question.

It is a political question.

#ReparationsFriday: Africans Rising was proud to partner with the Pan-African Women's Day Community convening in Kisumu, bringing together young women leaders, activists, and movement builders to discuss justice, memory, and the future of reparations.

By building our collective power at the grassroots level, we advance the vision of a unified, peaceful, and dignified continent.

Here are 5 core lessons from Kisumu:

Reparations must be feminist: For true Pan-African justice to occur, we must dismantle gendered and systemic oppression.

Memory is resistance: For our movement building work to materialize, history, memory and lived experiences are our strongest tools.

Women are knowledge holders: Women's leadership and wisdom are drivers for continental liberation. Elevating women’s leadership must be at the core.

Healing is justice: For sustainable activism to happen, restorative well-being and community care are essential.

Young women must shape the future of reparations: Young women leading at the decision-making table means a sure path towards a dignified Africa.

Join Africans Rising as we continue building an Africa defined by unity, peace, and dignity for all.

How are you advancing feminist justice in your community? Share your thoughts below!

No Pan-African Liberation Without Reparations for African Women!

On July 31st, movement builders, feminists, students, and community organisers gathered at Lolwe Book Store (@lolweke) in Kisumu Kenya, in partnership with Africans Rising member @achieng_achoki to mark the Pan-African Women’s Day under the theme: A Struggle for Women’s Sovereignty and Liberation.

This activity bridged the gap from historical colonial exploitation to ongoing neocolonial and patriarchal structures, where African women have carried the heaviest burdens from the theft of land and labour to the denial of bodily autonomy and political power.

Through political education, documentary screening, and a grounding session, the dialogue made it clear that Reparations are not just about financial restitution. Reparations go a long way to dismantling systemic oppression and restoring full sovereignty to African women. True repair demands an end to the historical and ongoing exploitation of women's labor, bodies, and resources.

As Thomas Sankara reminded us, there cannot be a true social revolution without the liberation of women. We honor the legacy of PAWO and the revolutionaries before us by continuing to organize for collective care, dignity, and people's power across the continent. This is why the Africans Rising for Reparative Justice (@afr_reparative_justice) campaign exists; to confront the legacies of slavery, colonialism, and exploitation, and to demand accountability, repair, and healing.

Thank you to everyone who joined, spoke, and organised! A luta Continua.

Tell no lies, claim no easy victories. Mobilise. Educate. Organise. Liberate.
