Starting a new project can feel overwhelming,

especially when you know you want something strong,

but you’re not quite sure what that looks like yet.

That’s where mood boards come in. They help define the direction early, so we can figure out what feels right, what doesn’t, and where the design should go before we get too far down the road.

Getting the direction right early can save a lot of time later.

Big news! I just signed on to design a beautiful little photography-driven hardcover celebrating LA's independent ramen shops. Food and book design, two of my favorite things, together in one project.

Also a great reminder that from my DC studio, I get to work with wonderful clients all over the country.

And if there's a book out there that involves dogs, please consider me 🤗 That would complete the trifecta of happiness. 🐶

You don’t have to have everything figured out before you call a designer.

A discovery call is really about understanding what the project needs to accomplish: Who is the audience? What should they take away? What does success look like?

Helping clients sort through those questions is one of my favorite parts of the job.

And yes, I know… I’m still figuring out this whole video thing. 😂 Eventually I’ll learn how to keep the lights from reflecting in my glasses.

Quick report tip: If everything is important, nothing feels important.

Good report design is about helping your reader understand what matters most and giving their eyes a clear path through the information.

Also, I’m not great at this video stuff yet. 😂 But give me time. I can only get better!

I know it's been a while since I posted. It's been a busy summer with new clients, new projects, and a little downtime.

Really looking forward to showing everybody what I've been working on!

The best projects rarely end at delivery.

Some of my favorite client relationships have lasted for years.

A nonprofit publishes an annual report and needs support again next year. A photographer launches one book and starts imagining the next one.

Design projects often evolve, and having someone who already understands your vision, your files, and your production process can make those next steps feel much easier.

I enjoy being part of that longer journey, offering thoughtful, ongoing support as projects grow and new ideas emerge.

Less time spent getting up to speed means more time focused on thoughtful, high-quality work.

I value long-term partnerships because they allow good work to build on itself, project after project.

If you're working on a book or publication that may evolve over time, I'd love to talk. by @lomax.creative

Complex to Clarity.

I've been thinking about what connects the different types of work I do.

Books.

Annual reports.

Impact reports.

Educational publications.

Long-format content of all kinds.

On the surface, they seem like very different projects.

But they all share the same challenge:

Too much information.

Too many ideas.

Too much content.

Too much data.

Too many stakeholders.

The real work isn't making a publication look good.

It's transforming complexity into clarity.

Creating structure.

Building hierarchy.

Guiding readers through information.

Helping important ideas become understandable.

That's the part of publication design I've always enjoyed most.

And it's why I've become equally interested in what happens after the design phase: working with printers, preparing files for press, evaluating production options, and helping projects successfully transition from screen to print.

Going forward, I'll be sharing more about publication design, print production, and the decisions that help complex content become clear, effective publications.

Complex to Clarity.

That's the work. by @lomax.creative

The difference between a PDF and a printed book

Something can look great on screen and still need adjustments for print. Paper, binding, foil, image reproduction, margins, and even how the book opens all affect the final experience. That’s why production matters.

I help clients think through those details before the book goes to print. by @lomax.creative
