The book launch/talk and all Black male panel for Loving Black Boys was this week and I am still overcome with awe and thanksgiving from it all.

The work that we did was phenomenal and is not happening—yet absolutely needed.

The panel included a pastor and financial expert, a political scientist, a hip hop and black feminist centered masculinities studies scholar, a political activist and social media analyst, and a mental health therapist.

When visioning this, some thought I should have “influencers.” That’s honestly where we continue to get it wrong. We choose clout over depth. I’ve always chosen depth over clout. It’s always been about the work for me, not just the event and it’s certainly not about the photos we get to post after.

The work that these men began is unparalleled and we need more.

A final word about the richness of our engagement: it developed out of the push and pull from the book—a black feminist text that loves and takes Black boys and men (across all genders and sexualities) AS seriously as it takes Black women and girls. This wasn’t just a gender centered panel. It was layered and curated and cared for and orchestrated — in black feminist politics and in intentional community with Black men.
