So delighted to share this gorgeous cover and lovely cover reveal piece in which I wax on about how hard covers are. I thought I knew what I wanted but nothing quite felt right until this one. The movement, the simplicity, the way the fall of the fabric evokes a sort of inverted Revelations “Wade in the Water” wave—I cried. So here she is, and you can have one of your own on September 9, which is basically tomorrow, so feel free to pre-order at the link in my bio. Many thanks to @casacassie for the stunning design, @atrandombooks for letting me be an author, and @thedennemichele and @electricliterature for the big reveal! So much love 💕 by @lomo_bk

I wrote a book, and I didn’t know if anyone would want it, and then they did, and I cried. My aunt has been asking me when my book event is since she learned I was working on one. Anytime anything writing related happens (graduate from MFA, story published), she’s like, “oh, so I should pick out my outfit!” The countdown is nearing. She only has about two years left to find an outfit. Can’t wait to see what she wears. taken in Brooklyn, New York by @lomo_bk

In 2019, my second year of MFA at the University of Michigan Helen Zell Writers’ Program, I won a Hopwood Award for graduate poetry. You know who else won a Hopwood? The brilliant @lomo_bk 🙂‍↕️.

Yesterday the @um_hopwood_program sent out their newsletter, and though I knew they were going to mention my book publication of What We Do With God (@haymarketbooks , 2025), I had no idea that I’d be Spotlighted, and even more to my delight, that I’d be Spotlighted alongside dearest @lomo_bk . Look at us—our debuts in the world.

The @um_hopwood_program room was my favorite place to be during MFA. Thank you so much for this honor. It means so, so much. What an encouragement.

And @lomo_bk —you have always supported me. From making sure you stopped by my table to buy a print when I was selling my art at Fort Greene Park to make rent back in 2022, to being front row at my NYC Book Launch of my debut book. You mean a lot to me. It’s an honor to share this space in the Spotlight (hehe) with you <3.

What We Do With God—a milestone, indeed. by @lomo_bk

This week on #blackandpublished #podcast @lomo_bk comes through to discuss her debut novel LITTLE MOVEMENTS.

The book explores what it means to leave behind the life you know and take a risk on what you love without the guarantee of reward.

In our conversation, Lauren discusses what she’s learned about her own artistic voice and where it fits in the expanse of the Black literary canon. And how she views starting over as an artist on the verge of breakout.

🎧 NEW PODCAST🎧 Debut author Lauren Morrow joins us to discuss Little Movements, a sharp, funny, and deeply perceptive literary novel set in the world of professional dance.

Lauren Morrow joins Book Gang to discuss her satirical novel, Little Movements, which follows Layla, a Black choreographer navigating a fragile marriage, a long-delayed hope of motherhood, and a career-defining opportunity at a prestigious arts institution.

When Layla relocates alone to create a new piece from the ground up, she finds herself confronting not just the physical demands of dance but the subtler pressures of tokenization, institutional expectations, and who gets to define what her work "means."

Drawing from Morrow's background in dance and arts publicity, Little Movements offers an insider's view of how cultural organizations frame progress, how money shapes artistic freedom, and how women—especially Black women—are often asked to carry symbolic weight they never volunteered for.

In this fascinating conversation, we explore:

📚 From MFA to debut novel: Lauren takes us back to the earliest seed of Little Movements, how her time at the Helen Zell Writers' Program shaped the book, and what her path to publication looked like once the manuscript was complete.

📚 Writing the politics of art: We dig into the behind-the-scenes realities of the dance world as a Black woman, including institutional language, and the quiet pressure placed on artists to make their work "say something," for others.

📚 Capturing movement on a page: Lauren shares how she approached putting dance on the page, given its inherent visual and kinetic qualities. We discuss the techniques she used in her prose to make readers feel the movement on the page, even if they haven't danced themselves.

📚📚  BONUS BOOK LIST: Don't miss this week's companion list with These 21 Books About Ballet Took Me Back to the Barre to reserve now to celebrate the arts! Swipe to see a few!

Connecticut holds a special place in my heart thanks to @conncollege where I met a disproportionate number of my favorite humans. It’s been many years, but I’m thrilled that @westportlibrary has invited me to #storyfest25 where I’ll make my grand return! And the fact that I’ll be in convo with @jbakernyc and @ambero007 for @minoritiesinpub is icing on the cake. If you’re in CT this weekend, come through!! We’re on at 2pm on Saturday, October 18! taken in Westport, Connecticut by @lomo_bk
