another year of snapshots for
you&me festival.
pt.1

i am going to start with this one, in which there is no human. zhao ziyi placed the branch that the previous performance had left on the stage in a corner of the venue, with the speakers for company. I once stood in this corner with my eyes closed for a few minutes; the low frequencies there were like a bath.

this year I shot many blue tarps on the ceiling, and their relationship to crowds & light. it reminded me of the blue tent on the sidelines of an NFL game, usually used to quickly examine injured players and decide whether they should continue with everything that comes next on the court.

about injury, about leaving the group, about returning to the group, about brutal consequences and the journey that follows.

Tomorrow afternoon, Wang Ziheng and I will perform a small-scale devised theatre piece: a turn-based card game about forgetting and guessing, a poetry–saxophone duel! 🖊️🎷

Today, while rehearsing, the two of us adjusted the game mechanics, and the chain of language and music slowly took shape at last. Then, walking out of the park, we saw the full moon.

The line I was most pleased with, written during rehearsal, fell into a crack in the ground (p8-_-#). After being annoyed for half a second, I thought that no matter how you described it, it was either hilarious or beautiful. I hope the ants like that card.

明天下午和王子衡在祥云小镇演一个小型机制剧场，回合制牌局，关于遗忘和猜测，诗萨对弈！🖊️🎷今天我俩一边排练一边调整了游戏机制，语言和音乐的链条终于慢慢成型，然后走出公园看到满月。排练中写的最满意的一句掉进了地缝（p8-_-#），恼火了半秒钟后觉得这件事怎么形容都很好笑或者优美，希望蚂蚁喜欢那张牌。中秋快乐！ taken in Beijing by @longbow_duohan

挣 Earn

Earn — a movement, and also an inner posture. It is a response to bondage on both the physical and the psychological plane: to earn the body freedom, to earn space, to earn the history that the dominant ideology has shrouded in fog — these are the eternal driving forces of the earn. At times hopeless and painful, at times brimming with force, it springs from a longing for freedom, a pursuit of identity, even a profound questioning of past and future. Each earn is a dialogue — with the self, with the outside world, with history. Struggling is a ceaseless process; wresting free, an impossible outcome…

Last Saturday, during the performance event I organized, a friend captured me cleaning up the glass shards and mopping the damp floor from the previous round during intermission, as well as helping lay out the mats for the jiu-jitsu sparring in the first round. Compared to my own performance as ground attack @groundattack_collective with Li Jianhong and Beijing Kendo Collective in the second round and watching my friends‘ performances afterward, the feelings of ’making this all begin‘ and ’cleaning up the aftermath‘ in these pics seem more vivid in my memory.

在上星期六我策划的表演单元上，朋友拍下我在幕间休息清理上一回合留下的玻璃渣和地面返潮，以及帮第一回合的柔术比赛布置软垫。比起第二回合自己（ground attack）和李剑鸿、北京剑道会的表演，以及后面看朋友们的表演，好像这些照片里那种“让这一切开始”和“收拾残局”的心情在记忆里更为真切。

Jiu-Jitsu competition, live painting, action calligraphy, HEMA, sports theater, kendo duel, American football drill, krump dance, performance art, noise, drone…….

’Live Animals and Ritual Clans‘ is a duel-performance event, inviting 18 performers/groups to become the ‘live animals’ of the day. Performance forms include dance, martial arts, music, voice, action, theater, painting, writing, sports, and more.

The performance is divided into 6 rounds, introducing a 1v1 duel format. In each round, two performers/groups perform simultaneously as ‘duelists’ (distinct from the concept of ‘joint performance on the same stage’), accompanied by a ‘sound referee’ who provides real-time sound feedback for the duel.

The pairing logic for each round more or less follows one or more of the following rules:

a. Static vs. Dynamic
b. Individual vs. Collective
c. Skill-based vs. Mechanism-based

‘a play ::: selbdritt’

We performed a poem called ‘a play ::: selbdritt’ I wrote in response to Paul Celan’s poem ‘Count the Almonds’

I extract the "selbdritt" (translated as "you three") from ‘Count the Almonds’ as a triangular structure, replacing the original Old German term's reference to "Saint Anne - Virgin Mary - Jesus" with a new set of relationships. Thus, I arrange a clear geometric structure for this poem: the upper half is divided into left and right panels by a rectangular table, representing the "Du" (you) and "Ich" (I) in Celan's poem, while the third figure in the original poem (the dead, Das Tote) is placed in the lower half.

In the new poem, "you," "I," and "the dead" have clear but not explicitly stated corresponding roles—"you" is a counselor/psychotherapist, "I" is a boxer/fighter, and "the dead" is some object capable of inscribing or recording time, perhaps a clock or a recorder.

The healer is also the interrogator; the one who endures violence is also the one who inflicts it; the inanimate and impersonal object observes, records, and engages in dialogue, yet seems at any moment to participate in judgment. Their monologues/dialogues cycle endlessly in a countdown akin to counting almonds.

::: anyway i did try something fresh and challenging while rewriting this one. i want no continuation or adaption which take no risks. i want to haunt you Paul just like what you did to that high school boy. lets count together.
