Life satisfaction bottoms out at 47.

We mentioned this last week as a secondary part of a carousel, it reached over 1.8M people and it was the thing everyone replied about, so here is the whole story.

Across 132 countries, satisfaction falls through your 30s and 40s, reaches its lowest point at about 47, then climbs steadily through your 50s and 60s. It shows up with or without adjusting for income, marriage, employment and health.

The main thing that you need to remember, is that this is a dip, not a decline. Life satisfaction goes back up, and it keeps going.

Which is worth knowing, because at 47 it does not feel like a stage. Careers are at their most demanding, children need everything, parents are starting to need help, and your body has begun changing without asking.

So when the flatness arrives it feels like evidence about your marriage, your job, or you. It is a pattern that shows up in 132 countries, in people whose lives have nothing in common with yours.

Here is the part that matters.

The friendships go first. Nobody falls out, the calls just get further apart, and by 60 the network has quietly halved. Then the training, which is the easiest thing to cut when the week is full. Then the hobby that was entirely yours. And then the sense of who you are outside all of it.

Researchers asked 228 people aged 79 to 98 what they regret. The three themes that came back most were things they had not done, the death of someone they loved, and health problems

So hold on to four things. One standing arrangement with a friend, in the diary. Two training sessions a week, however short. One hobby that is entirely yours. And tell someone when you are finding things heavy.

Because people in their 60s and 70s report being happier than you are now, and the ones who arrive there with their friendships, their strength and their sense of self intact get the most out of it.

Life satisfaction bottoms out at 47.

Across 132 countries, happiness follows a U-shape, and the low point lands at about forty-seven. It is not your marriage, your job, or a personal failure. It is a documented pattern, and it climbs back up through the fifties and sixties.

You are not at the end of something. You are at the bottom of a curve that rises.

Which makes now the moment to decide what the next forty years actually contain. Seven rules, none of them about getting smaller.

Build strength before you need it, while it is still optional. Stop waiting for the perfect Monday, because your future body is built on ordinary Tuesdays. Eat to recover, not to shrink. Protect sleep like it is part of training, because it is.

Make the healthy choice the easy choice. Train balance before you lose it. And keep good people close, because weak social connection carries a mortality risk on the scale of smoking and almost nobody treats it as health.

Underneath all seven sits one idea. Discipline gets you started. Systems keep you free. Motivation was never the plan, and the version of you who is tired is the one your environment has to carry.

Be strong. Rest well. Stay connected. Keep your future open.

SAVE THIS because your annual blood work is probably fine, and that could be the problem, it’s designed to tell you if something is already wrong. Not what’s coming.

Most GPs order a standard lipid panel: total cholesterol, HDL, LDL, triglycerides, fasting glucose. It’s a solid baseline. But a functional doctor orders four additional tests from the same blood draw that change the picture entirely.

ApoB. This is the single most predictive marker of cardiovascular risk, and most standard panels don’t include it. LDL tells you how much cholesterol is in your blood. ApoB tells you how many particles are building plaque in your arteries. Two people can have identical LDL numbers and completely different heart risk based on their ApoB. A 2025 European Heart Journal review found that in 9 out of 9 studies, ApoB was more accurate than LDL-C at predicting cardiovascular events.

Lipoprotein(a). This one is 90% genetic. You can’t change it with diet or exercise. About 20% of the global population, roughly 1.4 billion people, have elevated Lp(a), and most have no idea because it’s not on a standard panel. European guidelines now recommend every adult get tested once in their lifetime. One blood draw. One test. Done.

Fasting insulin. Your GP orders fasting glucose. But glucose is the last domino to fall. Insulin starts rising years, sometimes a full decade, before glucose does. By the time your glucose is flagged, you’re already insulin resistant. A fasting insulin test catches metabolic dysfunction while it’s still reversible.

hs-CRP. High-sensitivity C-reactive protein measures chronic low-grade inflammation, the kind you can’t feel but that drives heart disease, cognitive decline, and metabolic dysfunction. Elevated hs-CRP is associated with roughly 2.3x higher cardiovascular risk.

These four tests come from the same blood draw your GP already orders. They just need to be requested.

Nobody warns you that 45 to 55 is 4 losses and 3 gains, or that the gains last longer.

The losses are measured: life satisfaction bottoms out at about 47 in 132 countries, the rate of fat gain doubles from around 2 years before the final period, visceral fat rises about 6% a year through the transition, and hot flushes run a median of 7.4 years. None of it is a personal failing. It is a stage with a shape.

The gains are measured too. Reactivity to daily stress falls about 47% from young adulthood into midlife and bottoms in the mid-50s. Reading emotion in faces peaks in the 40s and 50s. Vocabulary peaks in the late 60s, and that peak has moved later with every generation tested.

If there’s one answer to all 4, it’s lifting.

Longevity is simpler than we’ve made it. Share this.

The habits with the most behind them are too boring to sell.

Nobody sells anything for going to bed at the same time each night. There is no supplement for seeing your friends. So the list that does the most gets advertised the least.

Same bedtime. Two lifts a week. A daily walk. Your people, on purpose.

We have six free guides on doing the boring things well, from strength to blood work. Comment "guide" and we will send you the link to choose one. by @longevitydaily_

“Normal” on the standard panel is not the same as low risk.

One blood draw.
One fitness test.
One scan.

Know where you actually stand.

Send this to the person spending $200 a month on supplements.

She never counted macros. Adequate protein every meal without weighing a thing. She fermented her own vegetables and made yogurt in the kitchen because that is what her mother did.

She did not do Zone 2. She walked to the market. She hung the washing. She spent an hour in the garden every day growing tomatoes and basil and zucchini and figs. Movement, nutrition, sunlight, and purpose from the same hour.

She did not take a sleep stack. She went to bed at the same time every night, woke with the sun, and kept the same rhythm for sixty years.

She walked after dinner. Every night. Around the village, with her husband, with the dog.

The longevity industry is worth billions. Most of it is packaging what she did for free.

Longevity is much simpler than it’s made out to be. That’s what @longevitydaily_ is here for.

What a full day of eating looks like at 50, if you want to still be strong at 80.

The secret is that its about eating well, not less.

Three numbers run the whole day.
40g of protein at every meal.
30g of fibre across the day.
30 different plants across the week.

This day clears all three. About 42, 48 and 44g of protein at the three meals, around 40g of fibre, and 19 different plants before bed.

Breakfast is where most people fall short. Toast and coffee is nowhere near 40g. Greek yoghurt with two eggs on the side gets there without a shake.

Nothing gets cut out. Every meal is built by adding.

If you are nowhere near 30g of fibre yet, build up over a couple of weeks.

You would move mountains for her body. Yours gets whatever is left.

Here is the experiment. Borrow your daughter's body for a year, knowing you hand it back. You would feed it properly, move it daily, put it to bed on time and book the appointment the first week something felt wrong. You would not need a plan for that. You would just do it, because someone you love inherits the result.

So here is what she actually inherits. The twin studies put the genetic share of lifespan at about a quarter. A 2025 paper argues it is closer to half. Take the higher number and half is still decided by what you do, and the slides list the parts that have been measured: 7,000 steps against 2,000, a regular bedtime, about 2 hours of lifting a week, and people.

What did not fit on the slides is the part about waiting. In 1,246 women scanned through menopause, the body composition change started about 2 years before the final period. Weight held a straight line while fat gain doubled and lean tissue fell. You would not let a borrowed body wait 2 years for a baseline. Get the scan and the bloods now.

Two limits. The habit numbers are associations. And we found no study we would put on a slide saying daughters copy mothers, so we have not said it.

The four tests she would run first are in our free Functional Strength Guide, with the standard for your age. Comment "guide" and we will send you the link, or tap the link in our bio. by @longevitydaily_

You have been graded on one sleep number for most of your adult life. It was not the most informative one.

Most sleep advice asks how many hours you got. Almost none of it asks whether you got them at the same time as yesterday. When 60,977 people had both measured, the second question carried more information about who died.

The fair objection is that nobody chooses an irregular life. Children, shifts, night sweats and travel choose it for you. Two details in the paper matter here. The relationship ran in one direction the whole way, with each more regular fifth at lower risk than the one below it. And the headline comparison was everyone else against the least regular fifth, so the finding is about not living at the chaotic end. It is not about perfection.

Be sceptical in the right places. Only 5.5% of the people invited into the UK Biobank agreed to join, and volunteers tend to be healthier than the country they come from. The bedtime study was written by employees of a digital health company, and they claim no more than a possible relationship. We kept it in because it is large and objectively measured, and we are telling you who wrote it.

The authors of the regularity paper call it a simple target, and that is the appeal. It costs nothing, needs no equipment and can start tonight. The other inputs are less obvious, which is why we wrote them up: six free guides covering strength, training, bloodwork, meals, food swaps and supplements. Comment "guide" and tell us which one you want.
